Career change into Law - comments/advice appreciated

Post by Houseofcards » Thu, 26 Feb 2009 12:25 pm

I am considering a career change into the legal field, i.e. practise as a lawyer in SG. I am a SG citizen but my work and tertiary studies experience have all been gained overseas.

I am currently an upper-mid level manager overseeing operations/HR/budgets/communications.

I am 30 years old and will need to complete a law degree (UK or Aust) before being eligible to sit for the Singapore Bar. I will be 33 years old -/+ a few months by then.

I'd like some frank views:

- Are ageist attitudes prevalent in Singapore? Will law firms not consider me for junior positions because of my age? I look younger! - as if that helps

- Will my professional maturity and the management skills I bring to the table be valued? Or will they be a liability?

- I hear that there is a shortage of lawyers in Singapore a couple of years ago. What is the legal profession like now?

- Any other comments appreciated. Thank you.
