Looking for a job during tourism visit

Post by binette » Fri, 20 Feb 2009 8:53 am

Hi,
I'm planning to come to Singapore in two weeks and the main reason of my trip is visiting the city since I want to settle in.
I applied for a PEP that was rejected.

Now I'm coming for tourism (no visa required). Legally, do you think I'm entitled to look for a job (ie having interviews) during my stay?
If yes, is one month enough to go through the interview process? I've already contacted companies from overseas.

Also I found a flatshare but want to pay only at my arrival day. How confident can I be regarding the availability of the room?

Thank you for your input . Any tips you could provide about job searches, places to visit, accomodation would be more than welcome.

* you can look for a jobs during your tourist visa.
* if you got the right skills and in demand, you can get a job within the hour!
* not much chance on the flatshare as you need to sign a contract with minimum period.

thanks for your input, Durain
I had confirmation for your 1st answer and , unfortunatly the 3rd one also.
I hope I'll have the experience of 2nd answer:-)

about accomodation, I'm waiting confirmation for an offer. If not successful, I might just consider shortening my stay and find hotel accomodation.

I would just like to know, if you can get a job with a tourist visa? Because at the moment I am struggling to get a Visa, my EPEC was rejected. And I am thinking coming over on a tourist visa and look for work, it that is possible?

You can look for a job with a tourist visa but you cannot work on one. Your employer has to apply for the work visa for you as the employer is your sponsor. So, if you CAN find a job, you can always get an extension (normally) with the work pass is being processed. Unless you have good audit experience and possibly restructuring/bankruptcy experience you may find it a little bit difficult finding a position although the big 4 are still hiring here but mostly new grads with low salaries where they work 'em till their fingers bleed while they get some experience.

Good Luck.

i wonder how affective that will be due to the current economy tho...i would assume that a person applying for jobs with a tourist visa still would not qualify for jobs that state 'singaporeans and PR only' on them...

this is a point winger7 but not all the jobs advertised are stated 'singaporean' or 'PR'.
I've been here for a month now and striving to find a role. not easy at all, I've been meeting persons, networking and having interviews....not contract signed yet. but i quite like the challenge and i love Singapore!

that seems like a good idea tho...i take it that u mean u dont need a visa for your country's passport? how long r u allowed to stay with that tho...1 month right? i have a canadian passport and i never needed a visa for my visits. It does sound like a good idea if i tried but i might end up spending all my money thats all :(

sorry binette...u mind updating me as soon as u get a job? i want to know how long it takes and all especially in this economy...is there much of a difference looking for a job outside of SG if you're still aiming for jobs that dont say 'Singaporean or PR' on them? :-|
