Anyone interested in climbing MT Kinabalu

Post by moho23 » Sun, 01 Feb 2009 4:42 pm

I'm wanting to climb Mt Kinabalu and am only able to go between 12th-15th Feb or 19th-22nd Feb.

I've seen flights for less than S$150 on Jetstar and packages from S$420- S$550 (activco.co.nz) depending on the number of people. I'd look to fly from Sing to KK on the thurs and then begin the climb on the Friday, flying back to Sing on the Sunday.

I've heard lot s of good things about the climb, with amazing nature, views and sunrises...sounded fun to me! 30yr male from UK with no climbing experience. If anyone else is available on these dates and interested then let me know...

Kota Kinabalu huh? I've been wanting to go there as well but I still need to learn more about hiking it before I'll be brave enough to go. Hope you'll be able to go on the said dates and pls tell us your adventure when you get back. =)

I have read Malaysia newspaper, and it mentioned that available earlist timeslot for climbing Mt Kinabalu is May 2009.

Have you got the confirmation from Mt Kinabalu Park ?

No not yet. The tour operator told me today that I'd be lucky to get anything but she's having a look. I know it's short notice so I'll wait and see. If I hear there's places available then I'll send an update....

Hi, I am keen to climb KK but none of my friends are into climbing mountains and hills. I do a little bit of sport climbing, but am definitely an amateur.

Keep me in the loop when you got more information, and I might join you. Regardless if its Mar or May.

Climbing Kinabalu is doable. I did it twenty years ago when there were no such things as mountain shoes, gore-tex clothes, energy drinks and power bars. I recommend that you bring all that along with you, though, and break your shoes before. Climbing up is ok unless you have a physical condition. Climbing down is extenuating because it may be slippery so you have to hold it constantly. You will lose at least 10 pounds and be bruised for two days after the climb. The climb is not dangerous at all. A friend of mine just did it no worries. The only negative is that the guide will probably rush you and you won't have much time for admiring the nature. Typically, the climb up to Laban Rata takes 4-5 hours. Then overnight in Laban Rata where it is freezing cold, wake up at 2 am, last bit to the top in 3 hours with torchlights, see the sunrise, back to Laban Rata for a drink and back to the park HQ that the guides (and you) want to reach before the 3 pm rain. I am told that you need not book a guide before as there are plenty of them at the park HQ but Laban Rata must be booked in advance, so it's basically the only thing to arrange. I see now that you can do it online.
Off you go

I plan to go up this year and just bought a load of clothing and equipment from a reallly good online camping and outdoors shop from the UK. You just have to contact them first about the postage to here first before paying, If you need some gear thats appropriate for the weather up there, check it out

Hi ALL
Great to know that there are many fans want to climb Mt KK
i was at KK year ago but cancelled my climbing trip because of the travel agent want to double charged me

SInce i was in KK, i went to Mt KK office in town, and based on their recomendation, all traveller need to book the accomodation in Mt KK before climbing, because its compulsorry for all climbing to stay over nite, at least 1 nite in mt kk.

thats mean, if u dont have any booking for the accomodation in mt kk, you can not climb, as the guard in the mt kk will ask your booking reference to let u in. its cheaper to go in a small group, bcos can share the fee of the guide trekker.

lets keep in touch , i am able to go in early may

[email protected]

cheers

been there twice. dont mind doing it 3rd and 4th time. experience is exhilarating! there are two trails to go up there. one is easier than the other. if u r fit, u can consider going up one way and coming down the other. do-able, but is still quite challenging. have an exhilarating time!!
