Girls only International Schools?

Post by cannedpeaches » Wed, 28 Jan 2009 6:12 pm

We are about to head to Singapore to check out the International School scene.
I am worried about my 13 year old daughter who is devastated about the upcoming move.
3 years ago she started at a school for girls here in London and has flourished so naturally I am keen for her to continue in a 'girls only' setting.
From internet research and the lists that work has provided I cannot seem to find any International Schools which are girls only.
Have I missed any?
Don't want to debate single sex vs co.ed issue - and of course we will be considering every good school regardless but would love to hear from any one who knows about a girls school or shares a similar concern. Thanks!

No, you're not missing anything. All the International Schools are mixed. There are local, girls-only schools but the highly rated, most academic ones will be very difficult to get into. Places are very sought after and demand high scores in the Primary School Leaving Exam. Places are allocated to Singaporeans first, then PRs, then other foreigners and the competition is very stiff. They also run on a Jan - Dec school year. You could have a look at the Ministry of Education website www.moe.gov.sg for more info. Some schools to ;ook up might be Singapore Chinese Girls School, Methodist Girls School, St Margaret's Secondary, Raffles Girls or CHIJ St Nicholas Girls School. There are probably lots of others but these are the ones I've come across. (Your daughter may do a runner when she sees some of the uniform gymslips straight out of Mallory Towers/Chalet School circa 1930 at some of the girls schools) She might find it easier to settle in an International School where she will only be the new girl for a matter of weeks and nearly everyone else there knows what it's like to move overseas.

IIRC they dont care if you're a Singaporean, PR or Foreigner when it comes to Secondary Schools...Marks are all that counts...
