Has anyone investigated the situation with regard to National Service in Singapore? Are children of expats expected to serve?

Employment Pass holders' children living here on Dependents Pass are not required to do NS. If parent and children get Permanent Residence, sons are liable for NS. Doesn't make much sense to me to require non-citizens to defend a country other than their own, but that's the law.
