Converting Indian motorcycle license to local one

Post by incognito6174 » Thu, 22 Jan 2009 1:13 am

Hi all,

I have just relocated to Singapore 6 months ago and wish to convert my Indian motorcycle driving license to the local Singapore license. I have the following specific question:

1. Since there is no classification on my Indian license with regards to which kind of motorcycle I can drive (e.g. based on cc as in Singapore), which type of license am I most likely to get (2B or 2A)? I wish to purchase a bike of around 400 cc.

2. Where should I enquire for a resale motorbike?

3. Which motorcycle groups are there in Singapore which I can join?

Thanks and appreciate your replies.

Himanshu

You will get a 2b license. The one for under 200cc. After a 6 to 12 months, you can take the necessary to get a 2a license and then after another year get an unlimited license.

looks like the cheapest/quickest way to get a Singapore Bike licence
fly to India - pay for licence without ever sitting on a bike - come back to Singapore and get Singapore Licence.

Not quite. I believe you can only convert a foreign bike license if you have had it for at least 6 months in your home country 'before' arriving in Singapore.

Course I talking about western countries. Indian licenses they may not even recognize at all due to the notorious driving habits in India. But then again, they should fit right in here! :P

Actually Indian licenses do get converted easily.

Converted to what? Anything other than 2B? In which case still need Basic Theory Test to get that (instead of the 2B Riders Theory Test).

At least if you do the BTT and get a Class 2b, you do get to skip the 2B Practical Riding Test

But then you still have to do the 2A PRT and the Class 2 PRT.

If the indian licence is not in English, will need an International Driving Permit also.

If they get converted easily then why is the OP having such a hard time?

Hi guys

Thanks for the replies, I just applied for conversion of my Indian license to a Singapore license and got it. I am now eligible to convert my 2B license to a 2A license. Is it a matter of just application or are there tests to be given?

SSDC and some other websites aren't so clear on this.

There is no process to "convert" a 2b license into a 2a license. You either convinced them at the time you passed you BT test and you received your 2B license that you could get a higher class or you didn't.

The only process available would be to appeal... good luck.

Ingonito, You are saying that you "Just" applied for 2B and got it converted. By "just" do you mean recently? Or have have you completed 1 yr on 2B and hence are eligible for 2A?

SE, 99.99% of Indians ride motorcycles < 200 CC, so very unlikely that Indians would be eligible for 2A straight away.

No shit? 99.99% of Americans ride larger bikes. Still highly unlikely that a rider would be eligible for 2A.

OP's original question doesn't make sense.

There is a test in CDC to move from a 2B to 2A and then to a Full class 2 bike license.

Also I know a person who showed insurance papers of a bike > 200cc he held for a few years before coming to Singapore and he got a full class 2 license.

Btw the rule for FDL conversion is that you must have held the license 6 months before "Date of Issue" on your EP / WP.

PR's / Citizen's must show proof of absence > 6 months outside singapore and the FDL must be issued during that absence period.
Absence permitted is only education absence (maybe work check with CDC).

Yes, with 1 year waiting/riding period between each of the sub-classes so starting from 2B you can get the unrestricted class not faster than in 2 years and few months.

I converted my Indian Licence to SG one 6 months back. The process is pretty straightforward. pass the BTT, then proceed to the counter and give them your Indian licence. get it converted to 2B. If you are Indian, there is no way the ladies at the counter are gonna give you a Class 2. If you are from the states, there is a good chance they'll give you a Class 2, UK too if you have the UK full licence. If you have owned anything above 600 cc in India for more than a couple of years, then you need to show the insurance papers, and there is a distant possibility that they may give you a class 2.
If you managed to convert your 2B to 2A on the fly, then i would love to hear how you did it..

But you need to take up the damn riding practical and theory courses and appear for the tests for converting to class 2A and then again for class 2 and spend about 250-400$ each time.:(
