Web host
Netsarius
I've only just started using Netsarius to host my website but so far they have been very helpful. Thanks for the recommendation and advice, Strong Eagle!
Note that while .com.sg does require a registered business, just plain old .sg is open to all and sundry.
I've been using New Media Express (http://www.newmediaexpress.com) for a while now. They freak up things on a disturbingly regular basis, eg. right now they've gotten their mail server blacklisted for spam, but as they say, pay peanuts for service, get monkey level service... will be looking for someone else next time around though.

http://www.netsarius.com/ is too expensive comparing with this one: http://www.letsbeauty.net/hosting.htm
it's not necessary host in singapore only, u can host anywhere and only purchase a .com.sg domain, pointing to the IP address that ur hosting is using. normally many web masters choose US hosting because:
1. DNS root servers are in US, u buy your domain, will take effect in 5 min.
2. US network is better than SG.

I've been through lots of web hosts like this one. Either offer you a fantastic deal like one dollar per month or they offer you unlimited bandwidth and disk space for six or seven dollars per month.dingsea wrote:http://www.netsarius.com/ is too expensive comparing with this one: http://www.letsbeauty.net/hosting.htm

Neither is realistic because nobody can run a server, pay for maintenance, pay for net access and pay for electricity and aircon for these kinds of prices. So they cram many hundred, if not thousands of users, onto a single server.
What happens is this. The vast majority of accounts that they sign up use almost no disk space (just a couple of pages) and no bandwidth... so they've really made money. But, if you happen to be a person that has some streaming videos that your friends want to pick up, I guarantee that outfits like this will shut you down citing your 'impact' on other users.
The other big area to consider is support and the apps you can run. Both InterXStream and Netsarius have helped me set up some complex applications including Oracle DB. And if you're going to have thousands of users at one dollar per month just how great can the service be... hint: it isn't.
If you have a real low bandwidth application and expect only a few hits, then maybe this is OK. But if you want a reliable service that won't cut you off because something you posted spiked you to 400,000 hits in a month, then I'd go with a realistically priced server.
And yes, US server prices are less than Singapore prices which are less that EU prices. But the difference isn't that great with a realistically priced service and there are other things to consider. If most of your traffic is in Singapore, then avoid the latency of a US based server. And if you want to be geographically found in Singapore by search engines, you must have a Singapore IP.
Conclusion: You are better off for anything but the most minimalist websites to recognize that a server costs money and to pay for the value you get.

Neither of these statements is correct.dingsea wrote:1. DNS root servers are in US, u buy your domain, will take effect in 5 min.

1. You need to have your domain registrar in Singapore only if you have a .sg extension. Otherwise, you can be registered with GoDaddy as I am for my Netsarius accounts.
2. I don't know what you mean be 'better'. SG has excellent facilities, much better than where I was staying last Christmas. There are too many variables to make such a blanket statement. Besides, as I noted earlier, you also have to consider the latency of international pipes.
