Irish- Moving to Singapore in 3 weeks! HELP!!!

Post by Irish » Sun, 11 Jan 2009 4:55 am

Hi there,

Just wanted to pop a post up here to get a bit of advice on my move to Singapore and maybe meet a few good people/drinking buddies along the way.

I am moving out with work in three weeks from Ireland and the move has come a little out of the blue, hence my panic and need of help!! hehe...

I have been looking over this site and have got some great advice, but reall would like to know the best places to live for a professional in my mid 20's. I will be working in town, one george street and would like to be in walking distance. I have been looking at condos like the Sail @ Marina Bay, The Icon, The Beacon, would I be right to think that they are within easy reach of the cbd? I have heard Robertson Quay is a great place for young people, would you reccommen any properties there?

I am also interested to hear if you can use uk electronics in Singapore, It looks like they use the same type of plugs, power, etc... but just want to be sure before shipping everything over.

lastly, (before this turns into an essay), I am really keen to meet a few new mates around my age (mid 20's) as I think it will really help the settling in period. What are the best ways to go about this, or can you recommend anything that worked for you?

Cheers!
Irish :D

Hello Irish,
There are several hundred Irish located in Singapore, its about the same size as louth so all within close proximity of each other.

Robertson walk (Check out Riverwalk, Aspen heights, UE Square or Rivergate) is a very happening place at the moment & is very close to both the CBD & city centre. It is walking distance to the CBD but be warned even short walks (10+ minutes) in Singapore will leave you wet with sweat, not a great way to start the day.
Taxi's are cheap as chips - seriously & the buses & MRT (DART lines) offer excellent coverage.Do make sure to shop around before commiting to a place the rental market in SG is favourable for the tenant at the moment.

UK electronics are no problem here as the voltage is the same however your DVD/xbox/playstation player may not support local DVD's & Vice versa.

If you want to hook up with other young Irish you can contact the Singapore Gaelic Lions through the website
http://www.gaeliclions.org/File/contacts.html/
or The St. Pats society

don't worry if GAA is not your thing, there are tons of non playing "Social"members if you know what I mean. :D

Singapore is a great little place & all ouf SE Asia is only a hop away, you'll love it!

Best of luck with the move.
