Freelancing, and the S Pass

Post by nikhilcharan » Fri, 09 Jan 2009 1:29 pm

I used to work as a journalist for a magazine in Singapore. About six months ago I resigned from that job and took up a new job as a copywriter with a renowned creative agency. The agency applied for my employment pass with MOM. But for some reason I was only given an S Pass.

Now I know that the S Pass clearly states that I can't work for anyone but my primary employer, but what about on a freelance or ad hoc basis? I've been approached by local magazines to pitch in story ideas, and contribute to their titles.

Can I freelance - even though I'm being paid peanuts - without worrying about MOM getting on my case?

Nope. I just lost a S pass holder because he was moonlighting at night delivering groceries. It's a fast way to get bounced out of the country and for good.
