Child Snoring Loudly

Post by chixchix » Sat, 13 Dec 2008 7:03 pm

Hii parents , does your child snore when he sleeps ? My boy who is turning 6, snores very loudly that it disturbs us as we all sleep in the same room.Initially I thought he is tired but as became a disturbance to us, I brought him to NUH.

X ray was done and it showed that he had Tonsils too big for a child and the tonsils were nearly blocking the airways..Also, the adenoid is very big. He was on Nasonex, a nasal spray for 1 mth, after which we did a Sleep Test, he became well. But days after the medicine was stopped , the snoring came back. He breathes through his mouth and doesnt sleep well at nights.

I have brought him back to NUH, and the doc put him on 2 mth Nasonex an mentioned that if he still doesnt recover after the 2 mth medication, he will have to undergo surgery to remove the adenoid.

Definitely its very painful for a parent to have your young child undergo surgery. I am thinking of seeking someone who is a professional in this ENT field , anyone has any good receommendations for me ?

It will be great help ! Thanks in advance ! :)

Both my children had their tonsils and adeniods out at an early age, younger than your 6 yr. old, and had no problems. Made a world of difference for their breathing, and sleeping. Do your son a huge favour and get them out asap. It hurts you more than it does them, they get jelly and ice cream for a day or two!

Yeah it really pains me to see him snore and sleep with his mouth open. But my hubby wants me to try the medication for 2 months as per what the doctor said and then if it doesnt go away,we should do surgery.

But can you share with me, how was your childs reaction after the surgery..i hope its not going to be painful for him. :(

anyways, what did you feed them after their surgery ? I read over the net that they need soft food, and I dont know what to feed him, in case he has a surgery.. dunno why but since he is not well ,almost every month, I just feel that as a mother , i havent been looking after him well. :(

Hi
My five year old was snoring like a trooper
Had tonsils and anenoids out at Mt E three weeks ago
Sleeping properly at night
We went to Dr Adrian Saujaren.

Very good.
Better to have them out when they are young. :)

I know I had my out as a wee tyke as well. Away remember it as we were allowed to eat all the ice cream we wanted during recovery. Not painful at all!

Now the only time I really snore is when I either extremely tired or extremely drunk! :oops!:

My son, age 4 has the same problem we have him on daily nasonex and some mild antihistamine, I am actually hoping that moving to singapore may help the situation, ie change in altitude (vs joburg) and damp air (vs really dry).

I have been told that its really not "in" now to take out tonsils and adenoids and its still major surgery, so I am going to try for a second opinion in singapore and try either chinese herbal stuff or there is a natural line of herbs as well sold here instead of antihistamine that has helped me.

I also had bad allergies etc, when I was young, no removal of tonsils but a change of environment cured it.

Does anyone else worry about the surgery aspect, not as in pain but the necessity?

Hii :) my boy also on Nasonex and a medicine called Zyrtex. She did mention that it will be a maximum of 2 months. after which if there is no improvement ,then there will be a surgery.

According to the doctor, the surgery is done by passing a tube through the throat ,and cutting the adenoid, and she says that the child will feel sore in the throat for 3 days and will be on 1 week of leave, if schooling. But she did not tell me anything about removing tonsils..well I hope for the best. :)

Well, when I was a kid, that was the best advise. Whether in hindsight it was is actually a moot point as there is no way of knowing. It's kinda like the vaccination thing. The vast majority of people never have a problem with getting them but occasionally there is a problem. Reverse application but agreed times have changed (regarding tonsils & adenoids). Neither of my kids had 'em out. Now 19 & 24 and never had a problem. I had tonsillitis as a kid.

Necessity of the operation? Maybe not a necessity but if it looks like they may be a problem, and possibly having to remove oneself to a different location to keep from having trouble seems worse to me. It's like being imprisoned as you can only stay in certain climes. I see your point but the op is so everyday (even if it is considered major surgery) I would rather have the op than a lifetime of wondering if I can live here or there. Interesting comparison though, much cheaper to have 'em out than uplifting the entire family and moving to a completely different location! And I like ice cream!

I didn't mean that one had to move as a solution but it apparently is solves this issue for a big majority of sufferers and since we are moving back soon, I did not opt for surgery for him here.

I don't know the full arguments for keeping them but its like the appendix one where you think its not doing much but now they find that the appendix actually helps with certain bacteria.

I'll be seeing his pediatrician before we leave, see what he says, wonder if kids grow and their throats get bigger or the tonsils and adenoids grow in similar proportion?!

Interesting. Never though about that. Maybe they are like the eyes. They always stay the same size as well. :o
