Anyone secured a job offer while still in their home country

Post by magpies » Tue, 25 Nov 2008 3:23 pm

Hi All,

Would appreciate some info/advice/tips from anyone who successfully applied for a job in Singapore while still in their home country. Did you just lodge your CV online with Jobstreet, Monster ...etc.. and/or use contacts in Singapore ? And how was the interview conducted, over the phone or did you have to fly to Singapore for it ?

I notice that most if not all job ads specify Singaporeans or PRs, can overseas applicants still apply for these ?

BTW, I'm from Melbourne, Australia.

Hi Magpies,
I did secure the job from my home country using the job sites.
I did post my CV in one of them and got a call from a hr consultancy which was sourcing Cv's to a MNC's AP head quarters here.
The interview was conducted via phone, think 3 rounds .
BTW it was yr n half ago ...

Cheers.

Hi blue_thunder,

Thanks for the reply. Is phone interviewing the normal process for overseas applicants, or does it depend on the type of jobs or industry ?
I presume that for positions that require specific technical skills, they probably won't need to see you in person and can judge from the CV and phone interview. But for jobs with more general skills set, wouldn't they want to assess you "up close and personal" ?

Anyway, would you mind if I ask what sort of job/industry did you apply for, and if working in Singapore has turned out the way you expected ?

Thanks again :)

Hi Magpies,

I am also an Aussie and managed to secure a role here in Singapore from Sydney. I did secure one interview via lodging through online job ads from employers directly but the role I actually secured (also w a MNC w AP headquarters here) was through a headhunter in Sydney.

I had 5 interviews - 2 via phone, and the MNC flew me over to meet with 3 ppl for the final round. Can't really comment yet re the lifestyle since it's only been my first week here

Don't bother applying for the jobs which says Singaporeans or PRs only, you'd only get the short shrift.

Hope that helps!

Hi greta3913,

Thanks for the reply and congrats on your new role in Singapore :)

Since you secured the position through a headhunter, can I presume yours is a pretty senior and important role ? And may I ask how long was your job search and why you chose Singapore ? Or were you just looking for job opportunities overseas in general ?

Cheers,

Hi magpies,

Am happy to discuss in further detail but perhaps it may be better if you could PM or email me if possible.

Thanks
