A lot will depend on what you have left unsaid.

Are you towing a family around? Or Single. Are you a staunch Hindu or do you drink? Do you eat out much? Are you vegan? Do you party much? If you are single are you willing to rent a room versus a condo or full flat? If you want your own digs, figure about 2~2.5k/mo for HDB inclusive of Utilities (rent, water & electric) 50-200/mo for phone (probably purely mobile) but long distance calls to India expensive. Course you can opt for phone cards but are a bit of a pain convenience wise. As you are an IT person, you would also want a fast connection/probably combined with TV so cable probably which may set you back around 100/mo (only guessing here). If you have a family with you you have schooling to think about unless they are young.

But if you are single, 6K is good as there are a lot here earning less than 3K and surviving and saving some as well. If you are still living at home in India then you will have a lot more expense here but you can minimise it and save quite a bit.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies "sundaymorningstaple" and the other user. Iam not single iam married, so i may need a flat ( I think in singapore you refer it as a condo, correct me if iam wrong.). I i can fit my expences with in 3.5 K, i wil be more happy. Iam basically a middleclass guy, so no habbits like drinking and partying. Those expences is not in my list. Can any one help me with few more details basically for a couple.

A flat 2BHK or 1 BHK - Rent in the range of 1.5 K - 2 K
Food & grosseries Expenses (South indian based food, self cooked) :?
Telephone, internet, TV, Travel by MTS etc: ?

Thanks
Arun

if you can do S$2k for rent and S$1.5k for other expenses, then it should be OK.

I would concur. Especially since I also live in an HDB (not a condo). You would want to rent an HDB (Apt from the Housing Development Board - 90% of all Singaporean live in these). Easily do-able for 14-1800/mo and starting to drop slowly due to the current financial mess. A 3 Room-Flat would be ideal (2 Brm). A condo, on the other hand, while having a gym and pool possibly as free parking if you own a car, will still cost you around 1K/mo more at the moment. If you plan on using public transport (MRT & Buses) with only one working you should be able to keep transports costs to around 150-200/mo I live in the North east and work in the West and my costs max out around 150/mo as I rarely use taxis at all, preferring the bus & mrt.

As I am married to a Singapore Tamil, Food costs are still within reason if you stick with ethic foods. Probably around 500/mo if only two of you and cooking at home. That would be without scrimping mind you. (Mind you, that I'm not Indian but American so we have a mixture of diets so my food costs are quite a bit higher especially with 8 adults in my flat!

thou from 3k to 6k sound like a good deal, however do calculate the monthly expenditure in singapore vs india. You'll have a better picture whether the rise in salary is worth it or not since i believe both areas standard of living is different ;)

6k is good if you and your wife are frugal.

Does your wife plan to work? If yes, good for her. If no, not to worry as hdb housings are usually surrounded by amenities, depending on location, such as mall, supermarket, eateries, community library, community center, schools, etc.
