Salaries Now Versus Six Months Ago

Post by stacey » Sun, 16 Nov 2008 6:12 am

I have a question from a fairly different angle, and hopefully less specific and more general so that more people can think about it and provide first-hand feedback or just their opinions.

How do you think Salaries may have changed between now and six months ago (or a year ago if you want). Given the last few month's circumstances, there must be some downward pressure reflected in new salary offers, do you think this is true or not so much?

On a personal level, I received an offer of say, for rounding purposes of $100k, (it was different, but this number should make math easier). Now looking again to get a similar job in SG and recruiters seem to think that although I may get $100k offer again, I should be expecting something closer to 80K, or 20% lower.

The only issue I would personally see with this is that I was already making more than 10% over $100k, so although I am fully aware that the economy is terrible, especially in London and New York, this would make it further unattractive for me/us to make the move to SG. I would still consider it if I get something close to my dream job/company, sand the location, but it seems something definitely worth thinking about much more and makes the decision to do move much more difficult.

Anybody with similar questions, experiences, or relevant feedback?
Your time and attention much appreciated!!!

The market right now in is satured with people looking for work. To be honest, I think you would be quite lucky to receive any sort of offer. I personally know of some people who had to leave the country despite willing to take a 20-30% pay cut.

In any case, its hard to make any clear comments to without knowing your job role, industry and work experience. It really depends on what your bringing and how in demand your skillset is.

What kind of job offer that makes you interested to Singapore instead of your home country ?

Jesse,

from reading your posts, one might ask you the same question......

Yes, but the difference is, I already answered that question in other threads :).

Anyway, what I mean is, if anyone already earning $100k a year in their home country, I'm just curious what makes Singapore companies / careers interesting for him / her ?

If he / she is moving here because of a better environment, higher salary, lower living cost, etc., or anything else not related to career, that would be reasonable.
