Hello,
I am a graduate student from Canada coming to do research and study at NTU (NIE) for one year.
My husband will come with me, and he is a professional chef.
We are both on a very tight budjet, but we can't stay at the NTU student housing because they don't offer full cooking facilities, and it is VERY IMPORTANT for us to be able to cook every day.
Are there any chances we can find an affordable private apartment for ourselves (no matter how small)? HOW? ANY ideas?
If we share a room somewhere, do you think we will be allowed to use the kitchen? Where should we start looking?
We are grateful for your advice and suggestions!

Hi, how tight is your budget ?
You can easily find a HDB apartment with 2 bedrooms for SGD 600 to 800.-- a month and be on your own with all the facilities.
Note that most Singaporeans eat out as the local food is very affordable. You're talking $2 - $4 for a meal at the hawker center. I'm pretty sure you can find Owners who would gladly let you use their kitchen.
You might however find that the kitchen facilities are very basic i.e. gas fired stove, no oven.
Good luck.

Okay. I think that's fine. A thousand dollars is moderate.

That's the minimum. There are many in the 1000 to 1500 range.
