Why is the internet speed so poor in Singapore?

what you got? cable or adsl? i find weekend evening is probably the worst. check your speed at www.speedtest.net at different time of the day.

I'm with quidsin on this - we have Starhub Cable MaxOnline Ultimate, and the speed is worse than my old 24mbit connection in Oz. I recall it has something to do with the backbone in and out of Singapore - but I'm not certain of this. HTH, P

Internet speed in Singapore is fantastic !
(fastest in the world I think - someone prove me wrong ?)
I got the 100Mb Starhub package and I get local downloads of 85 Mb and uploads of 7Mb.

As sierra suggested, problem is when going outside of Singapore.
Geography is a bit crap when you think about it, Europe and US are big hosts and they're miles away..... backbone/pipe out does make a difference but no matter how good it is, we'll always be the same miles apart.

(It's a real downer if you're an online gamer!)

Dobs - exactly - my e-mail and web servers are in the US with fallbacks to Germany! And it hardly sizzles on my PS3 either!

So, my options are to relocate servers here in SIN, but then, our international Clients will be hit with the slow pipes in and out of SIN - so I guess that means I cannot have my cake and eat it too!

big pipes coming into far east countries are japan, korea and possible hk, then singapore. i think south korea probably got the fastest broadband.

Kind of makes you wonder doesn't it - with SIN wanting to be a tech-hub, yet we don't have the big pipes.

Durain - I think it's JAP, then SK in terms of backbone/backhaul - I might be mistaken though.

Cheers all, Mr. P

Our old broadband in HK was WAY faster than the stuff here...and here was I thinking Sing would be on par. and it varies on the time of day as well...big differences.

Quite possible, not infrequently transmission is routed via Taiwan (from/to the US and UK for example). I remember when there was an earthquake in region I couldn't get into any Singaporean sites. There are often tremors that go unnoticed in these regions, could that have something to do with it?

my italian ADSL was 7Mdload/512KUpload
here in SG i got 10Mdload/384KUpload

but seems like I'm driving a Ford-T compared to the Ferrari I used to have in Italy..

This very disappointing..

Then speed also varies a lot during the day or the weekend...

Oh dear. I am coming to Sing from Japan soon, I assumed the speed would be on par. I am in a new building here, and there is optical fibre connection to the wall, our building has a 1Gb connection. Using speedtest.net, I seem to average around 70-80mb.

The results listed above really vary! I hope I can get something like Dobski mentioned.

singapore broadband speed wont be on par with japan. i think japan and south korea got the fastest broadband in the world (connecting speed, not BT for your bootleg movies, etc).
