Visa Question for Self-employed not needing job in Singapore

Post by gpcovenant » Sat, 01 Nov 2008 1:22 pm

I am trying to clarify what kind of visa I need and am having trouble finding the answer as my situation is atypical. Tried doing some searches and reading through I dont know how many posts and will try some more however if anyone has any suggestions, input its much appreciated.

I own my own software company with my family in the USA and all clients are in the USA. Because of this I have the blessing of being able to live anywhere in the world as long as I have a good internet and phone connection and dont mind being up odd hours to handle whatever comes up. Basically I would be in Singapore to spend my money... lol

What this means is I do not need employment of any kind which seem to be the basis of all the visas for Singapore. I do not see any kind of extended pleasure visa beyond the 90 days. My intention at this time is be there about a year, using to take trips to other parts of Asia. How often those trips will happen is up in the air at this point. I do not want to be worrying if I can get back in every time I take a trip.

Would this be something I would simple need to talk to the Singapore Embassy about?

Thanks for info or pointers on where I can find the info.

Peace

Edit: Well the long term social visit clearly does not apply as I am not a spouse.

The simple answer is no, you cannot get a visa other than the normal social visit pass with an extension maybe once. You can, however, get a new social visit pass every time you come into Singapore until Immigration gets wise to your staying here as a base. I know this for a fact because in the old days when I was still working in the oil fields, I lived here for 11 years on a tourist visa. I was gone for two months and home for one month (the length of a social visit pass). Today you would never get away with it and after about the 3rd trip immigration would warn you that it would be your last, or they would give you 3 days. Long enough to gather your stuff and get out.

The other way, is to try the entrepass route. Do a search for one of our regulars who goes by the nick of ukdesigner. He is/was in a similar line with existing clients in the UK. I believe he came here on the entrepass method as a sole proprietorship as well. It's the only way to do it without getting yourself in a possible jam.

Wow... odd. You think they would want the free money.

I will pm that guy. Thanks...

It would even make it difficult to go for PR wouldn't it cause I guess they base that on employment from what I have read.

And what about talking to the embassy? or is that going to put a red flag by my name and make it even more difficult?

you need 5 posts to activate the send function of your PM facility. However, if he is already registered here wouldn't he see it anyway here in the thread?

First things first though. You need the employment pass or entrepass first before you can apply for PR. They don't just give them away......

If I met a girl that I really liked would do it in a heartbeat. Nothing holding me to the states.

gp, sorry but I totally misread you earlier post regarding PM function. Why it didn't click at the moment that you were referring to ukdesigner and PM'ing him I don't know. Maybe daydreaming at the time. I though you were referring to a friend who your were enquiring about. It was really a #-o moment for me and  now that I've seen the thread this morning.
