depends on what exactly your budget and agenda is in bangkok. i like to stay towards the start of sukhumvit and usually end up staying somewhere around soi 10, 11 or 15. the Dream hotel is currently having an internet promotion of USD 86++ per night. its a fun hotel with a great location. in fact im staying there tomorrow night. hotels in bangkok arent doing too well these days so there are a few good deals floating around.

for another very no frills experience, try ruamchitt travelodge. its super old but very practical. i usually choose based on tripadvisor ratings and book thru asiatravel or asiarooms.

hope this helps

Taipan hotel

Hi, agree with other poster the Sukhumvit area is good area for visitor. I spent a couple weeks there, just returned yesterday. I stayed at Taipan hotel, 2000 baht per night with breakfast includued using internet promotion available on their website. Asoke BTS station is 5 min away and will get you most anywhere you wish to go. Airport pickup is available for 800 baht. It's a cheap place but has good service, good food, very clean and quiet.
