funny thing now is i still like receiving junk email. although i filter by subjects and if i get any lewd or not really needed spam i report it. but the ones with the genuine offers that make you all feel warm inside? yeah i keep those.
Heck, send me your email and snail mail address... I'll be happy to sign you up for all sorts of stuff.

Many years ago, my buddy signed me up for at least 100 church mailings... I got them for 15 years. I retaliated by signing him up for tools, political parties, sex toys, inflatable dolls... you name it. 15 years later, he still gets mailings.

Boy are you naive! 99.999% of email you didn't sign up for, but somebody sold your email to a scammer who resold it and on and on and on.......

what I find strange re-looking at this conversation is that in the UK the data is freely and legitimately available to purchase for businesses, and those that do hold it and use it are subject to data protection laws. I have used this kind of service before with excellent results. I still find it strange that a country that is quite savvy with the internet is so backwards in this respect.

I think, sms, you are actually the naiive one here. When you go back to the states I think you will also find that this is a legitimate business practice and that you have a very narrow minded view on this. Maybe you are the smoothest business operator out there but you must have had to do some door knocking when you 1st started or did it just all fall in your lap? Maybe you were born with a silver spoon! Who knows, but if you don't keep with the times then you just fall to the wayside. Digital connections are the way forward. Look at Apple and their iphone, Blackberry with their phones, all accepting emails on the go. I am afraid to say that I think you are a bit backwards in accepting the use of new technology. In a climate like now where every precious moment costs money every minute and dollar saved is now a matter of requirement that just pure laziness. This kind of blast allows people to maximise their time and their budget.

You also mentioned that you would throw away DM (direct mail) pieces that were sent to you too. How do you think businesses expand their customer base? Just through press advertising and business contacts? Surely if that is the case then why do firms like KFC, Burger KIng and even Ikea send out mailers consistently? Surely those billion dollar companies can't be wrong and you are right?

With cyberspace e-shots are becoming the norm. If you're not interested all it takes is one click to unsubscribe. Again, I re-iterate that my initial request was for legitimate business purposes and peoples request to not receive them in the future would be upheld and their company names removed.
Don't p*ss me off! I am running out of places to hide the bodies.

You reckon?

275 pieces of email in my in box this evening. 1 piece from service@paypal. The rest? selling viagra or how to get a big one, or have a tool that will make her scream, or god knows how many other pieces of crap all coming with 5 to 25 pieces exactly the same except from the from person. Absolutely rubbish. AND if you "unsubscribe" all you are doing is confirming your address is a live one. It may be legitimate (but apparently based on a couple of lawsuits in the US, it aint!) but it's not something I subscribe to. If I don't recognize the company as something I know about. It gets trashed. Full Stop. Same as the mailer in my snail mail box. New business "mailshots" are wasted on me cause they don't get opened. I'm not an impulse buyer and never have been. Therefore it is just aggravating and makes me swear that if I ever do need something they would be the last place I would go to.

Fortunately, for people like you. There are suckers out there that do open the snail mail flyers and email garbage. Arseholes have ruined a good advertising medium that now alienates more customers than it draws.

Course that's just my opinion and my dollars they/you won't get. :P

Oh, as an after thought, I'm not adverse to technology advances at all. In fact I welcome them. It the abuse of technology advances that I hate. It ruins it for those who use it correctly. But to get the same flyer or "mailshot" day in and day out by the hundreds, selling sex, sex toys, viagra, and god knows what, wears thin real quick. That is spam. Naive? No, tired of garbage yes.

Dora, the problem with that approach is that is costs a bomb to sue and there is no guarantee that you will get resolution. If the odds were good, then most bulk mailing companies would have been already sued into oblivion.
