Holiday in New York - advice!

Post by postmodernista » Wed, 15 Oct 2008 12:29 pm

Hey there,

I'm thinking of going to NYC for new years' eve. I know that all the hotels mark up their prices during this period because it's soooo popular!

Anyway, I've been checking out vacation rentals and they're still pretty expensive.

I'm going with a couple of friends and we're trying to cut down on traveling costs. Two of us are recently out of college and our third friend is still in grad school so we are really on a budget. Any reccos on where we can stay?

Nothing too dodgy though, we're all girls!

i don't know what's your budget, but since you're just outta college, i'll presume cheap = good.

go to the westside y or the big apple hostel or central park hostel (off the top o my head).

there really isn't such a thing as cheap and good accomodation in the city. why not see if you can use someone's couch?

it's a little bit quiet during that time of year, especially during the day, so you guys'll wanna be creative in finding things to do.

NYC is the shizz nitz, son! enjoy the nye party!

Hmmm, using someone's couch might be a problem because there's 3 of us and we're girls, so we come with a lot of bags and extras hee =D.

I checked out all the 3 places you mentioned, but they're all booked out. Basically, all the decent hotels/hostels in NYC are booked. I've been searching for a couple of weeks now for accomodation. That's why I'm down to vacation rentals. Places get snapped up pretty quick!!

It's not really an issue anyway because this would mean having our own apartment for the 10 days we're there.

Any more suggestions?

Did you check out NYC Craig's list? You might find some people who do house swap, or rent out their place at cheap rates if they are not in town, etc. You might even find weekly rental rates there!

Good luck and enjoy yourself!

bear in mind it's not likely you'll get a good location/accomodation for such rentals (unless you're paying top dollar).

i've not known any home owners from manhattan who rent their places out like that. you could try the other boroughs though...

the couch thing - you 3 could live separately at night; that way you get to meet more people and make more friends!

I found a few places in the Upper West Side for a reasonable price, and they were pretty decent too. The thing is, I'd prefer to live somewhere downtown.

Anyway, I guess it's too last minute for anything. I'll keep looking on craigslist. That's where I found the places!

Thanks for all the advice!
