I am trying to find a piano teacher to teach my daughter who is 7 and a beginner. I was quoted $165 for 4 lessons of 45 mins. Does that sound right to you? It is a little more than what we paid in the uk so wanted to check with you guys first.
Many thanks
Lily

Hi
That depends on whether the tutor travels to you or you are having lesson at the tutor's house.

Do find out the qualifications and experiences of the piano tutor too.
Hope your girl will find joy in her playing.

hello and thank you for your reply. The tutor would come to our place and my daughter is a beginner. It seems a bit on the high side to me. Are there any music schools on the East Coast you can recommend?
Many thanks

I go to the Yamaha music school in Jurong and it is excellent and I pay about 90 dollars a month for 4 x half hourly lessons with a great teacher.
I am expat and she is excellent...can provide details if wanted.

My 7 year old beginner attends the FaSoSoLa music "school" in Clementi. It's a very friendly place run by two young women. My daughter is thrilled to be able to play after 4 lessons. We pay $95 per month--4 lessons of 45 minutes. $145 doesn't sound bad per month for the tutor to come to your house. I pay WAY more for my daughter's Mandarin tutor who comes to our home.

Calalily - just got something in the mail the other day
Individual
30 mins $120
45 mins $180
60 mins $240
Group
45 mins $100
60 mins $133
Pro Musique School 159A Goldhill Centre
www.promusique.com
HTH as a comparison - seemed a bit steep price wise to me.
NOT AN ADVERT!
Mr. P
PS. Maybe I should learn something about playing music, rather than listenting to it. That's got GOLD written all over it!

My son is taking lesson from this lady who stays in Bedok Reservoir View. $120 per 4 lessons of 45 mins. But she does not do house visits.
She collects fees on a 4-lesson block. For example, if you missed your 3rd lesson, the following lesson will be counted as your 3rd lesson. If your lesson happens to fall on a public holiday, that day will not be included in the 4-lesson block.
er... am I making sense?

My 4 year old daughter is learning the violin from a professional violinist who is very good at making things easy to learn for a young child. She charges $140 per month for weekly lessons of 30 mins each at her home. That's the market rate. When it comes to choosing a music teacher in whatever instrument, the best way is to ask from friends for recommendations. I found out about this teacher from a music bookshop, so you can try there as well. There is no way you can tell from the price alone. Some teachers charge way below the market rate either to attract more business or they simply lack the confidence or experience, so a thorough research is essential for parents. It also depends on how you value musical education. Do you see it as an important subject that demands long term committed cultivation by a reliable teacher?
