schooling requirments

Post by lorenf » Tue, 14 Oct 2008 9:49 am

Hi,We have just arrived about a week ago and I am finding it very difficult to make head or tail of the school admission requirements.
I am from SA JHB, my son has completed his third term on the 26th Sept,Grade7.I am battling to find a school for him and nobody can explain to me if he will repeat the grade or what are the requirements or something.
I called about 3 schools in our area we stay in Meyer street, close to the Katong mall and I have searched all round to find a school.
I called the MOE to get more detail on where to start, I was referred back to the internet or to the school. When i called the schools I was referred back to the minister.Eish!
Could somebody please give me some advise on where to start and what is the process and the admission requirements.
I am loosing it as my son needs to get going asap so that we can secure his place asap.
kind regards,Loren
 [/b]

school term is about to end in singapore (i think it's exam season this month and next month). a fresh year begins in jan 2, 2009.

call up the ministry and don't take no for an answer - just explain politely you are not able to find the information you need online and would like to talk to someone or make an appointment to see someone about admitting your child into a school.

please make sure the information really isn't available on the moe website though...

sorry i can't be of more help, but someone with experience will chime in soon. you'll probably have enough time to get your kid into school. so for now... breathe!

Hi

I've listed some key info from the website, but do click on the link below for more information.
http://www.moe.edu.sg/education/admissi ... -students/

"Admission to Mainstream Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and JCs
Starting from admissions into academic year 2009 onwards, MOE will be conducting a centralised admissions exercise around Sep-Oct of each year for new international students who wish to join our mainstream public primary and secondary schools in January of the following year.

This new exercise ¨C the Admissions Exercise for International Students (AEIS) ¨C will involve a centralised test on English and Mathematics, and applicants who pass the test will be offered a place in a suitable school. The 2008 AEIS centralised test for school admission in January 2009 will be offered on two dates, 22 Sep 08 and 13 Oct 08. The exercise will be for new international students seeking admission into Primary 2¨C5 and Secondary 1¨C3. Our schools generally do not admit students directly into Primary 6 and Secondary 4 as it would not be in the students¡¯ interest to be admitted during these critical examination years.

There is no change for international students seeking school admission for academic year 2008. They can approach schools directly to be considered for admission into academic year 2008, subject to the availability of vacancies and schools¡¯ admission criteria.

International students who wish to seek admission into academic year 2009 but who cannot make it for the AEIS centralised test or who wish to seek admission to Primary 1 or junior colleges (JCs) may approach schools directly."

If it's of any help to you, students studying at the primary level in Singapore are usually aged 7 to 12. The levels available are Primary 1 to 6. Those studying at the secondary level are usually aged 13 to 16. The levels available are Secondary 1 to 4.

Good luck!
