Water births?

Post by tybriss » Thu, 09 Oct 2008 12:02 pm

I've been researching and trying to find out which hospitals have tubs you can labor in and even give birth in. I don't think I'll want to give birth in the tub but it might feel so good I might not get out! Anyways, I'm leaning towrds NUH but I was wondering what others experiences were.

Any water birth moms out there with some experience to share?

Good luck in finding somewhere, I hope you get your water birth.

my first started out as a water birth. i labored in the birthing tub but i had back labor so really wanted to be flat on my back when ready to push. i definitely would recommend it and see it all the way through if you can. the water is really soothing and the floating feeling is ready nice. before the birth i'd been told that once i was laboring in the tub they wouldn't let me get out if i started to crown. i was able to get out at 9cm and the baby was born about 15 minutes later. try doing a search on this forum - i think there was another thread awhile back about where you could have a water birth.

I was told by someone that they have a birthing tub at thompson but they wouldnt allow you to have the baby in the water you had to get out before that point. Maybe you can start your search there.

At Thomson they have a tub you can use during labor. You're not supposed to give birth in there but I've heard stories of mums just not getting out in time and having an "accidental" water birth. You might contact the ladies at parentlink (parentlink.org). I hired a doula from them and they are really knowledgeable about the whole birth scene here. They might be able to point you in the right direction for a water birth.

there is a bath/spa at thomson medical centre which is used for pain relief during labour (but not a water birth). however, there is only one bath/spa in one of their six birthing suites so its availability is unpredictable.

Here is an article on waterbirthing in Singapore. According to it, only NUH does waterbirthing.

I recently met a woman who had a great waterbirth at NUH. The other posters are correct about Thomson, there is only one birth room with a tub, so availability is limited. Maybe Mt. Alvernia has water tubs, but don't know how many. I had a waterbirth here, but it was a homebirth. Most definitely I second the advice to get a doula for a waterbirth, because they know how to support you. I've got fab experiences with some nice ladies at Parentlink, but there are also other places offering doula services as well. Good luck and have a wonderful birth :)
