If you're not picky about the gym, I'd suggest going to a community gym. It's a helluva lot cheaper. You pay per entry and it's around $2.50 - $3.00 and around 40c for a locker.

The one I frequent is Tampines ClubFITT gym but I've heard that some of the other community gyms go by different names/companies. And I've also heard that some of the gyms are quite old and disgusting. So, I guess it depends on the area you live in or work in...

I used to work in at a women's gym back in BC, so here're the pros and cons of using a community gym:

Cons--
No one wipes down the machines!! And there aren't many extra towels lying around for you to use to wipe it down yourself.
Shower facilities will be dependent on your luck... if you're at an old gym, you're screwed. Go home for a bath. If you're at a new gym, it's nice but it's not airconditioned >_<
Obviously you don't get a shower towel or a sweat towel, so you'll have to bring them. A sweat towel is mandatory and if you don't bring one, they'll make you BUY one.
Machines aren't connected to the TV. And if you find SG radio annoying like I do, bring your own entertainment... er MP3 player, I mean.

Pros--
ZERO risk of getting stuck with any contract of sorts
A lot cheaper xD

I love sky fitness its at harbourfront - you can google them - and have a weeks pass for almost free - in the hope you join. The contract term is a year though. You could always go to communal swimming pools - cheap and good exercise

Haven't checked in a while, but at least two years ago, Planet Fitness had monthly memberships for around $160/mo. Quite pricy compared to the ClubFITT gyms, but much cheaper than the $40/visit you'd get charged as a non-member at Cali etc. But if you sign up for a multi-year prepaid deal, you can easily hammer than price down to $50-60/mo. (I'm paying $42, but it's soon going to be time to renew...)

California Gym

Post by shaleong » Sat, 18 Oct 2008 10:12 pm

Hi,
I am a member from California Fitness gym.
They have short term dues membership which would be ideal for you. I think they also have a month to month.
If I am not wrong amongst all the other gyms in Singapore like Fitness First, Sky Fitness and Tru Fitness, California Fitness can be considered as the one with the lowest rate so far for their packages.
For me, I took up a 2 year membership which entitled me 1 year free which in total is a 3 year membership and I pay a monthly fee of $50 for unlimited usage.

I find that the energy level is good and they have a full range of equipments you need as well as a good range of classes as well.
Perhaps, you can drop in and look for any consultants and perhaps negotiate with them and you could walk away with a one week trial pass.

Hope the information above help you in some way or another.

Regards,
Sharon

That or you can read today's paper on how all three of the major gyms here are ripping off the public big time!

I'm a member @ Fitness First, my monthly membership is ard S$117+. Mine is not a passport membership which means I only go to 1 gym for me it's AMK hub. I think passport holder will cost an xtra 30-40 bucks. They regularly have promo so that you can save on the 1st payment and stuffs like that. However, for me when I joined the gym, i'm really crazy about it so it worth the money but after 1 year went by I hardly hit the gym so it look to me as quite a waste. So you really have to know how to keep on motivating yourself. :P
