Where to find tutors

Post by jenmarceaux » Sun, 14 Sep 2008 1:24 pm

I am trying to find a good English grammar tutor for my 8th grader. My kids are on a distance-learning program through the United States, and my son is struggling with sentence structure, grammar rules, etc. His distance learning teacher recommended he work with a tutor for help in writing essays. I believe some of it is laziness on his part (not putting a capital letter at the start of a sentence), but much of it I think is just information he doesn't know or understand. I have tried to work with him (I was an English major), but that's just not working out.

I have a friend whose children attend SAS and she checked there for me, but has yet to hear back about English grammar tutors. I thought perhaps someone else would have another suggestion on this board.

Thanks.

Katja,

I'd love to talk with you more about tutoring my son. Would you email me off-list please, at radiojen @ mac dot com (spelled out to prevent spamming)

Thanks,

Jen

As the forum does not allow solicitation or self-advertisement as a matter of policy, tutors tend to not understand English all that well here as they still solicit business in spite of the orange banner and various stickies on the forum. Our posters are asking for recommendations. That usually means the giving of information of somebody who they have used for the purpose inquired about. If they are recommending themselves then there is no guarantee that they are any good and it becomes solicitation.

Therefore, if you can recommend a tutor or outfit that does tutoring (and is in the business of doing so), you are welcome to provide the details of same openly here in the thread itself. When you tell somebody to "Call/PM/Email me for details" it becomes suspect. Why not post the information locally so all can benefit?

To our posters asking, please remember that we tend to err on the side of caution as with the viewership this board enjoys, the threads would soon just become a hodge-podge of advertisers & con artists. We are here to help if we can. We earn nothing for all the hours we put in here. There is a difference between helping others and "helping yourself".

You can go to any bulletin board in Holland Village, the various "country" clubs, e.g, American, British, Dutch, etc, etc. and they will also have lists of tutor that have been used successfully. Also you will find maids, stroller/prams of the upmarket kinds and all kinds of other stuff as well.
