What to look for in a children art school?

Post by shirley_sheena » Mon, 08 Sep 2008 11:21 am

hi everyone,

Any advice on selecting a good art school for my children? They are 3 yrs and 6 years old.

I have these concerns when choosing an art school. Any advice would be appreciated!

1) What should my children learn from the class?
2) What factors should i use to evaluate the different art schools?
3) Any good recommendations?

Thanks so much!

At those ages you should be looking for a very loosely structured programme. They shouldn't be learning technique as much as exploring their own interest via touch, experiment and most importantly FUN!
A group that gathers for art for the under 7's would ideally incorporate freedom of expression above any technique. It is more about the process rather than the form used and it should not be used to simply create something that would please Mum and Dad ( a picture to take home).
3 year olds love to squidge paint between their toes and make handprints and footprints. They should be free to explore messy art as well as clean art with pencils. Developing eye hand co-ordination and motor skills is more important than developing pleasing artwork. So in short choose a group that looks like the greatest fun, that is not results lead and has very few rules (other than keeping some kind of order in the class!).
Good Luck! and please let us know if you find such a group. I usually organise home groups for my daughters friends as Ive never found in Singapore an art group for such young ages that isn't rules and results driven.
