Baby bottles for a flight to UK

Post by blownalot » Sun, 07 Sep 2008 6:06 pm

Hi

Does anyone have any experience with taking bottles for a baby on a plane since the new security restrictions on liquids on planes came in to force? We are flying to the UK via Bangkok so can't really make them up for the entire journey before we leave.

Has anyone taken a large bottle of boiled water with them and the formula to make up bottles in flight as needed?

Did you have any problems at security with it?

What about getting bolied water on the plane - any issues with that?

Thanks in advance

Hi

When we came over to SG from UK I had a flask of boiled water and security took the flask away and emptied the water as they said I can get it on the plane - there were no probs getting it on the plane. I also took a tin of powdered milk and that got through security with no problems. We flew with singapore airlines but you are better off checking with your airline before you travel.

We had not only the water but the tub of nappy cream taken away. I had to taste the milk powder which was let through, we managed to get hot water from the plane kitchen.

There was a poor couple behind us who had cartons of ready made milk and these all had to be opened and tasted, I don't know how they managed to travel with half a dozen open cartoons of ready made baby milk.

Mind you we were traveling from the UK to Sing and it was just after the liquid bomb scare started, they are a bit more relaxed these days.

Depending on the airline you can request bottles of water to be reserved for you when you board. When flying SQ ask when you are checking in. We've done this for both SQ & BA with no problems. Also, you are allowed 100ml at the checkin. This is approx 4 oz. Each time we've traveled in the past year I've gone to toss the bottle and they've said it's ok to bring through.

thanks (or no thanks) to the UK, most international airport will impose the 100ml liquid restriction to the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) recommendations.

here's the condition...

* Exceptions to the 100ml rule can be made for baby food or milk. However, you should only carry what you need for the flight, and you may be asked to taste these items at security control.

* Exceptions may also be made for medicines. However, you may be asked to taste any liquid medicines, or to provide evidence (such as a doctor's letter) that you need them for your journey.

so better have a taste of the baby food so you know what you are in for. :)

as cbavasi mentioned, it is best to fone up the airline and inform them of your baby's need. airlines will have UHT/fresh milk.

This summer I flew to the UK with 2 litres of goats milk and 1 litre plus one big avent bottle of cows milk. There were no problems at all as I declared them up front. We were flying Qantas and I have 2 year old twins.

The airline can be funny about storing the milk in the fridge but jsut smile and they will as you say ok I will keep it here hope my child doesn't vomit if the milk is sour!!!!

On the return from Heathrow a different story. They wouldn't let me take the cows milk in the cartons so I filled as many bottles as I could then we just went and bought more within terminal. The BA lounge would not heat the milk before the flight because of safety reasons on using a microwave...go figure... but they would provide a heap of steaming boiled water.

I always carry a print out of the airport regulations with regard to baby regulation when travelling as no one at the airport has ever read them

Hope this helps
M
