phone service

Post by batman_hood » Tue, 02 Sep 2008 11:34 pm

Hey everyone

I'm going to be an exchange student at NUS in Jan 2009 and just wondering on the phone plans down there? I need something that doesn't have a contract (since ill only be there for one semester) and will allow me to use some sort of long distance (phone card maybe) to call home to Canada frequently. I'd also need to call locally too i would assume. What are the best phone companies/plans down there? I already have a phone here so i'm assuming all i would have to do is swap sims?

just get a prepaid sim card. all the mobile provider are pretty much the same on their rates.

you can either do a search on this forum or have a look at the providers...

yeah just get a prepaid card.
You can get them at any 7/11 ( there are over 360 in Singapore) but you need to take ID with you to register the card.

A quick visit to the web sites closer to the time will tell you the best IDD rates

Good luck

do prepaid cards have the best rate or is it possible to get on a good monthly plan without a contract? i know that t-mobile here in the states lets you get a plan and just pay at the start of every month and its pretty much the same as having a contract except you dont. anything similar?

post-paid/monthly has to be a 12-months contract. some of the deals even lock you in to a 24-months! dont know about the rates for IDD, have you check the mobile provider website yet???

Agree with Durain - check the sites. We don't know your calling patterns so only you can do the research!!! If you have some specific queries post back and we'll try to help!!

If you're calling back to Canada then look at using Skype or a similar VOIP service. Have a look at http://www.skype.com

Cheers, P

Check out Onesuite.com, less than 2 cents to call Canada. You also have the option to use prepaid phone card service or VoIP, either way both are cheap and reliable.

There's free wifi in every corner in Singapore so take advantage of it.

Ahh, this kind of answers my last post.

So I would want to go the route of a pre-paid simcard.

Anyone have a estimate on how much a cheap mobile phone that could take a sim card would be?

thx
