Feeding in public
Feeding in public
Hi, I will be moving to Singapore next year with a new baby and was wondering if it is illegal or considered offensive to breastfeed in public? If so, what do people do when they are out and about? Do shopping centres have parenting rooms?
Many thanks!
Many thanks!

Hi
I am breastfeeding my little one and you will find allot of the malls do have areas where you can breasfeed in a little room. if you are out and cannot find one I have used changing rooms, been in a coffee shop even a bench in one of the malls - people do not usually take any notice as long as you are discreet.

Not illegal to do so, you may want to buy a nursing bib if you're breastfeeding in public, or visit this link that has a list of nursing rooms for mothers: http://www.mumcentre.com/essentials/nursing.htm
There's a huge difference between a sweaty bloke travelling on the MRT without a shirt and discreetly breast-feeding. OP, it's not a problem at all. If you are just starting out and aren't very confident, you might want to use a mother & baby room, although they double as baby-changing rooms and can be a bit wiffy, but no-one will bat an eyelid if you sit in a corner of a coffee shop to feed. My local and expat friends feed anywhere we have coffee or lunch and no-one pays any attention. Once you get the hang of it it's very easy to do discreetly and unless people are really in your face, they won't know what you are doing anyway. You can throw a muslin or shawl over your shoulder for added privacy, rather than those baby-bib thingies.
