The US doesn't have enough troops in Iraq and Afghanistan how could they get involved with Russia even if they wanted to? There was really zero chance the US would come help Georgia, and they are pretty naive/crazy/stupid not to have know that.
Because a strong, self-sufficient Russia would reflect poorly on the US administration. At least to the old guards.
While true that the US do not have the ground troops to support Georgia, and they are probably smarter than to be so blatant, Georgia must be even crazier to initiate the offensive if they knew for sure the US would not help. You don't simply pick a fight with a neighbour more than a hundred times your size just because.
US involvement need not necessarily be an all out show of force, especially not with discontent at home with the Middle East fiasco. There are plenty of agencies that engage in more, shall we say subtle, operations.
