Does Singapore have an electronics district?

Post by JayCee » Sat, 09 Aug 2008 10:41 pm

Hong Kong has Sham Shui Po and also parts of Tsim Sha Tsui, Wanchai and Mongkok. Tokyo has Akihabara. London has Tottenham court road.

Anyone know if Singapore has an equivalent? I ask because I was walking along orchard road today and wanted to have a look at TVs and couldn't find anywhere that sold them, the only one was the Best in plaza singapura at dhoby ghaut. I know a few places like lucky plaza have cameras, video games etc... but finding a place that sells TVs was pretty difficult

Best, Harvey Norman, Audio House, Gain City, Courts. In "Funan the IT Mall" there is also a Harvey Norman & Challenger which recently has branched out into HD/LCD TVs as well. Just noticed that yesterday while done there. Also notice they have revamped the layout again.

The closest thing we have that resembles an electronics district is just the two Shopping Centres: Funan the IT Mall & Sim Lim Square. There is another - Sim Lim Towers but you would need a person VERY savvy with the place to go there with you as they will rip you off big time if given the slightest chance. Caveat Emptor (Let the buyer beware!) is the catchword at this place. Even Sim Lim Square you should already know what you want and the specs of what you are looking for. Best, Courts, Audio House, Harvey normal are all large format stores so it's pretty much fixed pricing. You can also try Paris Silk Store either in Nee Soon or Holland Village but again you need to know already what you want there.

Having just bought a whole load of electronic goods, i can say that you can bargain anywhere. I have asked and received extra discounts from harvey norman, best and the other one in Lang court, I forget it's name.

I've had an extra 20 or 30 bucks off the price (even on promo'd goods), so it's worth asking.

Good luck.
