job hunt short term relocation?

Post by Hithnar » Mon, 04 Aug 2008 5:36 pm

Hi everybody! I need some advice :? Me and my husband would like to try and get a job in Singapore, and we thought it would be good to go to Singapore and stay there for some time, to ie. be more available for job interviews, etc.. So we saved up some money, that will hopefully sustain our stay in Singapore for 2-3 moths, and if nothing comes up, we would simply go back to Europe.

But now I wonder, how should I go about two things:

1) Although I have contacted a local embassy in Europe, and have tried numerous times to get in touch with the immigration Office in Singapore, no one can tell me how long will we be able to stay there. So my question: can I get extra days I can spend in Singapore by crossing the border from time to time? In example, with Malaysia? I guess it would be something called 'viasa run', but does it work like this?

2) How would you go about renting a place to stay? Me and husband don't really need any luxury, so I thought maybe a common/master room in a shared apartment would be just fine. But do you think anyone will rent out a room, if it's prolly only for short period and we can't even say how long we would be able to stay in Sg? Or are we just bond to use a hotel/hostel?

Thx in advance for any advice, I am so confused right now :???:

1. you can stay in singapore on a social visit visa for 30 days. you can cross over to malaysia on the causeway and your social visit visa will be 1 week. there are other options too like applying for EPEC. search the forum for more info on this as this has been asked many times.

2. most landlord would want a minimum tenancy contract of 1 year. your other option is look for a Service Apartment. they are not cheap but more flexible on the rental duration. else, hotel it is.

With regard to rentals, the only venue open to you are hotels (or friends) as you must have a resident visa of some kind in order to rent something here. Can be a Work Permit, Employment Pass, or Permanent Residence.

Maybe some of the "cheaper" outlaying hotels?

Happy to do some research if needed.

Thank you for all your answers :D But, oh my! I can't even rent a common room without EP? Good to know, because I found two agents who are willing to rent us a room for 3 moths stay, and I don't want to get in legal problems :o
