Sky TV & Electrical Stuff

Post by colettekent » Sat, 26 Jul 2008 3:24 am

Hi,
We will shortly be relocating to Singapore. We have a Sky HD box which we own. Will it work over there? Also will our other electrical things work...TV, Microwawe etc?
Many Thanks
Colette :)

sky HD box wont work but others electrical will. if you still want to watch sky in singapore, then you will need a slingbox (and someone in the UK with a sky box and internet connection).

I'm intrigued....

Please can you tell me more about this Slingbox thingy Durain?

Utlimately, does it mean I could watch BBC's 'Strictly Come Dancing' this autumn :D

Pity me as a poor addict who is sorely disappointed to find the BBC's iplayer does not work here and is desperate to find a solution!

Thanks SMS

I think I understood about 50% of what was written... not very technical-savvy me. At least now I know there is something out there for me to try to grapple with :???:

ok, i will try to cover the other 50%.

before you can use the slingbox, you need internet connection (cable or ADSL router) in the UK (or your home country). the slingbox connect to the TV aerial and also to the internet router. you need to config port forwarding on the router to point to the slingbox. the slingbox has freeview DVB built-in.

to connect to the slingbox in the UK from singapore, you would put the IP address of the router in UK. it will then connect to the slingbox and enable you to watch all the freeview channels.

alternatively if you want to watch BBC (iPlayer), ITV, C4 (4oD) and C5 on-demand or download, you will have to run a proxy PC in the UK. you dont need slingbox for this.

let me know if you need more info. :)

i got a few emails on this, so i will post it rather than replying each one...

ok, your sky HD box will not work in singapore. so you need to "house" your sky HD box with someone in the UK and with an internet connection and use slingbox to access the sky box over the internet.

here's what you need in UK...
* sky box (or HD)
* slingbox
* internet connection with a router
* TV aerial (if not using sky box but freeview DVB)

and here's what you need in singapore, and anywhere else...
* internet connection (you can access your sky box via slingbox wherever you are worldwide as long as you got internet connection)

btw, you wont be getting HD quality over the internet but still can watch all the sky channels you are subscripted to. you will have full remote control over your sky box in the UK too. if you are sharing the sky box, you will be watching whatever channels the person in UK is watching.

the slingbox comes with freeview DVB. you access the freeview channels the same way as you do with the sky box.
