Hello

I shipped in our container some new clothes and bedding for our personal use but a friend just told me that I will probably have to pay taxes on any new items. I stupidly forgot to take labels off. oops  . Is that correct?
do customs go through every single item?
thanks in advance

No they don't, and all you have to say is just because they have labels on, doesn't mean they are new. To be honest unless you have enough to start a business, I wouldn't worry about it, because you have probably already paid tax on them anyway in your own Country.

Although technically speaking they can charge GST of 7%, I find it highly unlikely they will, when shipping personal goods from home, they may scan the container or open the odd box, but they will not be looking for new clothes.

Most things are cheaper in Singapore and customs know this, So i really would be very surprised if they charge you on your personal items, when moving here. But maybe others can shed some light, if they have had to pay any duties, I doubt it very much.

We bought a truck load of new stuff to be sent out here, I think most customs folks realize you are relocating here, and understand you tend to buy for your new home.

"Hit them with a huge bill" is last thing they want for a new guest to the country, unless its a car!!

Yeh don't worry - we had a new couch and a new bed in our container - we decalred the wine we'd bought and paid the duty on that - they didn't even ask about the other stuff - and yes, our container was searched because they gave us a nice little note telling us they had done so.

Hi Boulevard,
We are flying on the 9th August. We have been in a nearly empty house since 1st july but it adds to the fun!!! kids are certainly enjoying the space. I am very excited too but very sad to leave friends and colleagues. I am sure we will get to meet some really interested people and visit some great places.

Best of luck with your move.

xx Lily

Lily - hee hee had the same but it was actually when we arrived. Lived with a rented vinyl couch, mattress, pillows, and sheets for 6 weeks as our container was delayed!! Although it did afford me the opportunity to clean the spllied grouting, dropped sealant, and various other mess in our brand-new apartment!!! Hope you have a safe trip!

Cheers, P & C
