we didn't use a tour guide as such, but when my family visited, we rented a villa, which came along with a car and driver - since he was local, he took us around (without the obvious tourist traps) so all we did was research the places to go and tell him the destination. The villas depends on how many people there are to be cost effective, but with cooks, cleaners and drivers, the privacy was great - The thing to watch with tour guides is the tourist shops that give them a kickback, so you end up getting dragged around numerous places that are just not interesting. My last two visits to Bali have not been fun,
