Post by kim13 » Thu, 10 Jul 2008 11:11 pm

My wife and I are expecting a baby boy soon and have been discussing whether to let our baby to be a PR (like us) or Singaporean. Anyone who know the differences or benefits or disadvantages are welcome to provide your opinions. Thanks ya :D

Benefits

2. Child care subsidy of $150/mth (PR no subsidy from 1 Jan 09)
3. Infant care subsify of $400 (PR subsidy is $150/mth)

Disadvantages
1.
2.

Neutral
1. Baby need to served NS no matter PR or Singaporean

Is your wife working and paying income taxes in Singapore?

If so, she may stand to benefit from the working mother's child relief:

See: http://www.iras.gov.sg/irasHome/page03.aspx?id=220

Also I think the healthcare subsidy for citizens is slightly higher than for PRs, assuming you stay in subsidized wards in the public hospitals.

At this point, the baby can "only" be a PR or LTSVP holder as neither of you are Citizens so the baby can not get citizenship by birthright.

No it doesn't work like that in Singapore. The child will not be a citizen at birth unless a parent has a Singapore passport.
