Where can one go to find a queen mattress that is 80" (200+cm) long -- the standard in the U.S. and other western countries?
We made the terrible mistake of selling 2 queen pillowtop, extra-deep mattresses before moving here from the U.S. last week, thinking that we could just buy them in Singapore before our container arrives, but in looking around at mattresses, we have found that a) decent ones, like so many other basic items, cost 2-3 times more here, and b) all mattress sizes are only 75" (190 cm) long, which is too short for my husband, and thus, unacceptable.
Today, someone said that while some places will charge a fortune to convert their mattresses to the longer size, a few stores might actually carry the longer mattresses at a better price. But where??

Hi and welcome to Singapore!
Try wikipedia.com and search for mattress sizes. We did that before we came from AUS and THANKFULLY we worked out that the sizes were different. We bought enough linen with us. It's a trap for new moves!
Our only suggestion is to get onto your shipping company and see if they can load your container with something you can buy online or get friends/family to buy and get to your container before it leaves. Our experience is that shipping companies are happy to hold a container (assuming it's sole-use) and put it on the next ship out of the point of departure. Been there, done that. "Hold the boat! "I have used that expression a number of times.
Beds/mattresses are expensive here.
Your other options might be to source the matresses/bases and get them backloaded on a container (depending on the prices).
Sorry we cannot help out more, but I'm sure there will be other helpful suggestions here.

Lots of places to buy US sized mattresses -- I have a house full of them
Takashimaya, Four Season Hotel, I think Robinsons too carry US sizes. Some Singaporean mattress makers will make them for you too. Check the yellow pages, then get ready to pay through the nose I'm afraid. Did you bring your linens at least? Also quite expensive in Singapore.
