Revert

Postby JermD » Tue, 01 Jul 2008 1:24 pm

Firstly apologies for my brief rant, I just wanted to get this off my chest and the forum seemed a good place.

Why do people (and I know I'm generalising) use the word "revert" completely in the wrong way? According to the Oxford Dictionary Online (and various other sources):

revert
verb (revert to)
1 return to (a previous state, condition, etc.).
2 Biology return to (a former or ancestral type).
3 Law (of property) return or pass to (the original owner) by reversion.

— ORIGIN Latin revertere 'turn back'.

It does not mean "reply" or other such nonsense.

OK, rant over.

Mm...I've never heard anyone use the word revert in place of 'reply'. That would seem an odd error to me. A more commom misuse of the word is to say 'revert back to' which is a tautology ( reads "go back to back to").
Another wierd but very common misuse of a word is pressurised e.g "I don't want to pressurise you into doing this task".
Response: "Why would I have any problem with you inflating me ?!" :D
A lot of people seem to feel the need to inflate the word pressure
Gee I'm funny eh ?! In fact this whole topic could be a lot of hot air !

It probably started with George Bush, who, not being content with 'strategy' used the word, 'strategery'.

I should have possibly given some context to this. I filled in an online enquiry form (on the SP Services website) and once submitted, got this displayed:

Enquiries Submitted.

Thank you for using our enquiry form.

We will attend to your query and revert shortly.

Actually, just on this...

Postby sierra2469alpha » Wed, 02 Jul 2008 3:07 pm

I love the revert thing, also. Sometimes I am tempted to say "reverse" - but then again, that's just my sick sense of humour.

I came across another expression I had not heard of today:

kiasu-iam

Could someone be kind enough to enlighten me, as Google wasn't terribly kind to me this morning on this matter.

Thanks! P

And if they could make it easier to pay our bills, or at least, on their so-called "internet site" (!!!) the View Bill option is not what it seems!

In fact, it's nothing!

But hey, I just live here - and a sense of humour works! Mostly! And I'm sure their English is much better than my Mandarin!

Laugh - it's fun - it's all good. Frustration just makes you an old bastard like myself ;) Now THERE's a tautology!

Cheers all, P & C :D
