suits for tall man

Post by ffsgrelier » Wed, 18 Jun 2008 9:04 pm

Good evening all,
Am in search of a place where I can purchase a suit for my 6 ft 3 hubby. He is ever so busy at work I cannot get him to go and see a tailor . The only other option I can come up with is for someone to recommend a tailor who can copy from an existing very tired pair of suit trousers !
Any recommendations ?
Thanks.
PS : if someone could also let me know where i can purchase some shirts with extra long sleeves, that would be great.

He will also do the shirts for you too! It's always better to get new measurements, but if you don't want that, just take a shirt and a suit along. But really its not a problem here in SIngapore.. TJ will visit him at work, just arrange the time.

http://www.tjtailor.com/ When i was here in 1970, his father was running it, used to be in Change Alley, then they moved onto the bridge, moved again because of the development. I thought the pricing was very reasonable, I had a suit knocked up a while back, cashmere for under 600.
Although i was saying its all changed these days, back in the 70's they would start on it right away, while you watched, then you could pick it up the next day, they used to do the full monty. not now though, all tailors just do the measuring up, and there are workshops for churning them out, that the tailor may own.

I think Vivo maybe a bit more pricey because of the rent!, those that have been around along time, appear to have lower costs. if they have not moved for a while. I think the next 10 years in Singapore is going to be an expensive experience to come.

suits for tall man

Post by ffsgrelier » Sat, 21 Jun 2008 6:40 pm

Went to meet T J and had a little fun while he described you ksl as did not have a clue apart from what you said in your pm. He mentionned a few surnames which obviously meant nothing to me either. A tad awkward but fine.

Hubby ordered 1 suit, 1 extra pair of trousers, cashmere type and 2 shirts for about $ 900, does that sound about right ?

Thanks again for recommending him, he was very pleasant and location is spot on for hubby to pop in for a 5 min fitting in his busy schedule.

Well I guess, he does have that many expats, that he cannot recall them all, but i would say he could recall the grey haired Brit!, The price for a 6ft 3inch guy, seems not too bad at all, considering I am only 173cm and I paid, I think it was 550 for a suit. Which i was very happy with.

I can see it's not in your nature to bargain  but the next time you should, just for the fun of it. :) They are good tailors, not to worry! But squeeze him for 50$ and you will get it. They deliver world wide once they have your measurements, and can be counted on, to deliver on time.

Hi ksl
You are right indeed, bargaining doesn't come naturally to me :( but you had mentionned 550 for your suit in your pm so price didn't feel too bad with extra trousers and 2 shirts as well. I'll mention your comment to my hubby, he is always up for a bit of banter and may try to bargain next time .
I'd say TJ probably remembered you, are you in the shipping business ?
thanks a lot again for your advice, much appreciated, looking forward to seeing the result at the end of the week.

The price is fine, cannot complain at that, for the size of him too! But Singapore are all traders, they expect to bargain, in some areas, especially in Change Alley area, Bugis, Arab street, and a few other areas, where tourist often go, So normally they will start on a higher price
if you don't try to bargain a couple of $, they end up with a very good deal.

Bargaining gets less and less these days, especially with prices rising so fast.
I'm in the health & wellness, drinking vinegar business, although not directly.

You could try Fashion Tailors @ Orchard Plaza too. The workmanship is good. Do get the measurements first. The website is www.fashiontailor.com.sg/

It always makes me giggle when locals use the word "Patronised" as it's got 2 completely opposite meanings!
