Let me just give you a little tip, that may just save you 50% or more, I have been dealing in watches for a hobby on and off, since 2000, I still have around 20 left of very cheaper automatics of Seiko. all parallel imports, although the difficulty maybe in servicing a guarantee, I would just take the watches back and give a new one, they are that cheap.

So don't purchase from a dealer, if you can search out a parallel import, you would get 30% on a brand new model, and 50% if you purchase from a reputable seller online.

I also purchased the Seiko Sportura, with black gun metal armband, retailed last year at 1.400k here in Singapore, and 600 pounds in UK, I gave 700 Sing $ for mine, online from Singapore, of course there is a little time involved in searching, but my main point, is the mark up on watches, can be up to 1000 of %

The art of watch selling is the controlled high end marketing and brand imaging, take the designer watches for example, name is what counts, not whats inside, a 500 pound watch may have a 5 pound mechanism, normally battery operated.

Mechanical watches of course come at a higher price, if the mechanism is highly rated. I love watches, especially the mechanics, and have fixed a couple of very old Omega's that died in my time, although I am not an expert, i just have an interest in products that have high profit margins, and want to discover why

http://www.claude-valentini.co.uk/millenniumsports.htm see the price listed at 795, comes in a lovely walnut box, for a fraction of the price. like :) I'll sell you one for 400$ still in the box ha! Mechanics are important, and they need to be researched too, if its very expensive.

There are hundreds of genuine watches, that never make it to the retail shops, these are project runs, that never make it, for some reason or other, great collectors items, although backing them up, with detailed history is not easy. because retailers and dealers have never ever seen them listed, but they do turn up on the market.

Well after a really good look Jacques Etoile , I would choose the Primus, it's a classic design, very clear and the movement is good, Ebay is okay if you can get it authenticated by the seller, he must admit to it being original to be protected by ebay policy.

But look at this one by the same Company http://cgi.ebay.com/JACQUES-ETOILE-SS-D ... dZViewItem

Reserve on that is 1400 US$ new price is 2000. It's not new, and probably the first of the moon phase watches made.

Top quality without a doubt, I also found some part of the Unitas 6300 movement on ebay at 16$ US, it was covered so i don't know what it is.

Feedback is important when buying watches on ebay, must be over 98% with a 1000 sales or more for peace of mind.

i agree on many watches being overpriced for exactly the reason you stated... but... some marques cannot be obtained or easily obtained on the gray market!

there's a watch fair going on in hong kong sometime september. really really really interested and keen on attending (have a buddy who can get me a pass) but my Financial Controller is making wild blasts of protests...

apparently many pre-owned/hawked pieces are going for a song over that week to recoup the (mostly pawnshop) owners some cash. arrrrggghhh...!!!

i shall need your parallel import scoops for grand seikos and pateks!
