Other than Ikea

Post by Justin_Br » Wed, 30 Apr 2008 12:33 am

Could someone please provide some other locations to buy furniture/bed/etc other than Ikea.

The location must be able to deliver the large items and if they have a website if you could provide.

The items required would be everything since I will be arriving with nothing in my condo.

Price range would be middle to low end since I may not be taking them with me on my next move in 3-4 years.

Courts is probably the most famous/common big retailer of those items.

You could also try Robinson's (which is more upmarket/expensive, more of a department store than just furniture/housewares).

There is serious lack of decent mid-range furniture in Singapore, Courts and co. has the sort of things you would stick in a rental flat. ( B-team designers). Harvey Norman in marina walk again its OK, but everything is just not quite right. That’s what people call mid range around here,

There is the really rubbish stuff you find in small furniture shops normally at the bottom of HDB estates, can be viewed as disposable furniture.

A lot of these teak places try to fob off the poor finish and fit under the guise of "ethnic" furniture. (Criminal use of lovely solid teak), the exception is PLANK in park mall, but not cheap.

A shop in Parkmall on the ground floor next to the front door, but a bit too trendy, but good effort on the design and quality point of view for a local set up.

Big Three story high mall near upper bukit timah road, near Banyan tree store. Only one floor is worth seeing the rest is cack same as the courts stuff.

And the rest is high end stuff with 3-4 month lead times.

So the answer to where to find good quality, nicely designed, mid price furniture, so far I have not seen any. I have looked everywhere. We resorted to having stuff made and sent over from Hong Kong in the end.

We got a lot of our furniture at Barang Barang. It was actually above our price range, but they always have some sort of discount going on, and we ended up buying all of our living room for 30% off, which brought it down to exactly what we were planning to spend.

If that wouldn't have worked out- we saw some great stuff at the furniture mall- we were just about to buy a sofa in one of the shops when we got a phone call from Barang Barang about the sale they had going on

And in all the shops we saw- delivery was free or cost uo tp 30 SGD. We only looked at items that they had in stock and available for delivery, and it really wasn't a problem anywhere.

I like the stuff at Barang Barang too.

Although didn't end up buying any big pieces since we brought most of our furniture with us.

For electronics is there a version of "Bestbuy" or "Futureshop" in Singapore since I will be needing a tv and found that the prices at courts was VERY high compared to the US and Canada.

I found myself in the same situation about 8 months ago but worse, I was only staying for 1 year, so I needed some low end but mid quality furniture.
Moved from Mississauga.

It is very tough to find but Furniture Mall on Beach road is your best bet, but you have to bargain. When are you arriving here?

There is no FS or best buy equivalent here. Courts, Harvey Norman and BEST are their chains.

I go back to Toronto every 3 months, so I ended up waiting to go back home to buy a projector at Tiger Direct because the prices here were more.

Maybe thats not much help, but maybe when you arrive I can help you source some of your furniture items.

They also advertise in the classifieds too, but again, price V's quailty is much to be desired, some supposed to be antique, and also repro furniture, too...expensive for what it is, mostly bad workmanship, although you can occassionally find nice stuff. They can also make to order, all of it is from mainland, hence the quality control.

What's up with the slur on IKEA? Can the product be even worse in Singapore than in US? I mean, all the stuff comes from Asia, right?

Um, "other than IKEA." That slur. Wasn't that a slur? I actually love IKEA myself; bought some cabinet hardware in the New Haven store a couple of hours for the house I'm trying to sell. I do acknowledge that the flakeboard is flimsy, the upholstery is crap, and the lighting, except for the undercabinet kitchen strips, is beneath useless. Even so, I was comforted beyond words that they have stores in Singapore. Tell me, do they have an 'As Is' section there?
