FINDING A SCHOOL FOR 15 YEAR OLD WITH GCSE'S NEXT YEAR

Post by judy gavine » Mon, 28 Apr 2008 11:48 pm

We are moving to Singapore with my 15 year old son in the summer and need to find him a school where he can slot into the 2nd year of GCSE's . So far the only school that has said yes is OFS. Is this a good choice? WE currently love in Scotlnad and the curriculum is quite different and the OFS curriculm doesn't quite fit so I don't know how this will be managed by the school. Has anyone moved when their child has been a this stage. The alternative is husband goes we don't!

You might have been joking, but I'd give this some serious thought. Some people I know in similar positions have chosen this as a temporary solution. It is by no means ideal -- but if your child's education is going to truly suffer in a move then I'd think about it. OFS has a great reputation though, if you can get him into OFS I jump on it.

Thanks for this. I am stressing about it as my son is an A student at the moment and its not that I don't thinkhe'll cope with the work its just that OFS and the other schools only examine certain subjects at GCSE the rest seem to be internally assessed as part of the MYP. I very much doubt if an MYP qualification will be transferable back to Scotland which means he will only have 4 or 5 GCSE's - not great. We're only out for a year so he needs to be able to sit his highers/A levels in Scotland on his return.

Personally, I would stay in Scotland and let your child complete their next school year. This could be put in your husband contract about family not able to move due to educational reasons, possibly giving him a few extra trips home at holidays. OFS and your school won't be the same. I think you, or more likely your son, will regret it later on.

Have you checked that OFS offers the same subjects that your child is presently taking. Can you son board in Scotland in order to finish his education? Or stay with family while finishing. I feel its a bit unfair to move at this important stage in his education.
