getting married to a singaporean: any risk?

Post by luxiana » Thu, 03 Apr 2008 3:17 am

hello,

I'd like to know what the obligations of the husband with regards to his wife are?

does the relationship change once people get married?
does it change when women get pregnant or give birth?

I've heard that, in case they have to divorce, the husband is going to be in a lot of troubles as he's not protected at all: basically he could loose most of his assets.

is that true?

is it possible to find some info online on the obligations of both husband / wife in singapore?

thanks!

This has less to do with "Singaporean" and more to do with marriage in general. It's all the same.

you need to know that in Spore - the Women's charter factor very much in the laws - and in the case of separation/divorce - women are generally protected much more & given the benefit of doubt. The balance is not tat equal in favor of men!

Your son will have to serve the army when he turns 18. If can bear the two years of him leaving you in the hands of the SAF, then it should be fine.

hi all, thanks for your answers.

I am trying to help a friend of mine here...

As for the son (if any) I think he'd get my friend's nationality (if it's possible).
Right now they are expecting a girl anyway ;)

but: what would happen if most of the husband's assets are not in Singapore then? (and not in a country of the commonwealth)

No, laws regarding divorce and division of assets -- which I think is what the OP is asking about -- differ considerably from country to country.

This is an interesting post. Seriously, marriage itself is a calculated risk. Therefore, nationality should never play a part here, unless you are talking about countries that permit polygamy. In Singapore, we have the women's charter that protects the rights of the woman. So, have no fear. As for the hubby, you have the court of law to protect you if your wife turns abusive or violent - just get a court protection order.

Hope that helps.

basically, divorce law in singapore in biased towards the wife.
the husband can expect to lose quite a fair bit of his assets unless he can prove beyond a doubt that the wife is unfaithful or abusive.

however, I believe that the most important thing to consider for both parties would be housing.
Singles are not eligible for government housing in singapore.
Divorcees might find themselves burdened with a sudden increase in living expenses due to rental...
(CPF can be used to pay off your housing loan but not your rental)

divorce is an ugly business here...
marriage too. ;)

Singles.....do you mean foreigners or singaporeans? As far as I know, singles aged 35 and above are allowed to purchase one.

local lad, you are correct with limitations as to what they can buy and where they can but, but yes if you are single and over 35 you are allowed to purchase an HDB Flat but on on the open resale market. They cannot purchase a new flat direct from HDB.

Who can buy an HDB flat.
