landlord asking for copies of passports is this the norm?

Post by ozzmum » Wed, 26 Mar 2008 7:46 pm

This is the second condo we have rented in out 15 months in Singapore. We have been in the latest one for 3 months and now we have the owner ringing us saying he wants copies of all our passports. We didn't have to provide these documents for our last landlord and I was just wondering has anone else been asked to provide them as well. I just don't feel comfortable in giving those details and i can't see what purpose they would be needed for. can anyone enlighten me?

Landlords have a legal obligation to ensure that the tenants are legal residents in Singapore. Landlords will get jailed if found to be harbouring illegal immigrants.

Checking passports for valid visas is the norm.

Yes, he wants to check your basis for residing in Singapore eg EP or PR. That is his responsibility and he is in big trouble if he lets to you and you don't have legal status here. He is supposed to check. Don't worry about it - it is all above board. Maybe your first landlord was just lax.

Passport Copies

Post by VLewis888 » Sat, 29 Mar 2008 12:38 pm

It is a norm.

The following documents will be required:

Passport Copy.
Employment Pass.
Letter from Employer (Optional).

This is to ensure that the tenant living in the Landlord's property has legally entered Singapore and that he/ she legally working in Singapore.

Agents will also do a verification check with the Manpower Ministry.

I enquired the same.
