Do your homework and learn the 4 C's. Clarity, Colour, Carat, and Cut.
All of these will influence the price.
When you compare a cheap diamond to a $20k to 25k Tiffany one, the difference is chalk and cheese.
Other thing to keep in mind are that a lot of the diamonds flooding the market are of the smaller carat which previously were unprofitable because of labour costs, but now are because of production shifting to India.
Jewellery encrusted with these sorts of diamonds will therefore be cheaper.
I guess it really depends on what sort of rock you are after.
Most true! because industrial diamonds for example are very cheap in comparison..many years ago i purchased one here in Singapore for 3$, and tested it too, with two coins and a sledge hammer

it made holes, straight through the coins

but it was worthless. It's very easy to con the unsuspecting, when it comes to diamonds, be very careful and do plenty of home work.
