Update on schools and situations: Comments needed

Post by walkerstr3 » Thu, 24 Apr 2008 3:58 am

We have just returned from our "look see" visit to Singapore and are moving forward with our relocation. We loved Singapore and all that it has to offer and are very excited about this move! As we were only in Sg for such a short time, it was a total whirlwind!! :???:
We managed some school tours and SAS is tops on our list!! Our son will be waitlisted there and another school, which is very discouraging when you are moving 1/2 a world away! I am looking for other suggestions for schools for our 5th grade (next year's placement) son. I need to also mention that he receives support (in the US) for Reading, which several of the International Schools (with a US based curriculum) do not offer. We were even basically turned away at one school due to his reading issues (A bright kid, he has dyslexia and requires more time to read passages, etc.!! )(We were told: They can't cope here! We were quite insulted!!) :x
I would appreciate input and comments on any other schools that may also offer additional support for reading. Some options given to us have been:
EIS?, ICS, ISS??? HELP!!!
I welcome any comments, both positive and negative to assist us here!! (We cancelled one school visit because we ran into someone who had first hand knowledge of some issues at that particular school.)
THANK YOU!!

PS Barbarus- I cannot reply directly to you through this forum because I have not made enough postings?? However, I would like to try and contact you directly. If you are able, please contact me again, or is moderator able to assist here? THANKS!

Now that you have 5 posts you should be able to send messages.

Try using the Search box at upper right.

"Dyslexia support" brings up a couple of links to start researching.

Thanks for the direction Maneo. I was able to post!!
BTW- What do expats do to get their kid into schools when there are such long waitlists at schools with US based curriculum?? Suggestions or alternatives?
Thanks!
Apologies if this already posted, I had a computer issue and everything was shut down!

There were 2 American families in our old condo who sent their children to OFS while waiting for SAS. Same is true for British, Aussie...etc (we had a lot of children in our condo). The children were between the ages of 5 - 10. I remember a lot of conversations by the pool - I think OFS got a bad rap as a 'waiting' place for other schools - but all those families were happy and the kids were all really bright and excited to go to school. Depending on the length of your posting is it really necessary to go to only an American school? I went to a Canadian school from 6-12 and when we moved back to the states my only real issue was Geography & American History.

My kids just got accepted last week to SAS after being on the waitlist since Sept 2007. They are currently going to ISS. My company picked up the cost for the kids to be on the waitlist which was on the order of SG$2000/child. I believe it would be applied to the tuition for the school year.

Friends of ours are considering Tanglin. They were told they can pay SG$100k to be guaranteed places for their kids in the next school year. They're currently on their waitlist. I think they said that this cost cannot be applied to the tuition. This SG$100k was

ISS - not too bad. Overall the school is lacking in space and do not have enough facilities. Kids are bussed to another location for swimming as an example. Teachers are pretty good and caring. I'm not sure of their capability or programs for kids with dyslexia.

Good luck.

Mostly deleted by OP, I missed the second page of the thread before posting irrelevant information.

It was recommended that we stay in the US and have our students enter their homebase educational system as per usual until spaces open up at SAS. Homeschooling and/or tutoring here in Singapore were not a good option for our family. We then prepared somewhat to be apart, with one parent setting up things in Singapore, the other in the States single parenting for awhile. We would have proceded with that plan had a space not opened up in August, since mid-year (January) intake is common, and there are always enough 'changes' going on with students (which is common in an expat lifestyle) coming and going that I'm certain our ten year old would have been fine with coming any time.
