West Coast Swing dancing

Post by k76 » Tue, 11 Mar 2008 4:41 pm

Hello!

I've been searching for West Coast Swing dancing schools, dancers, clubs etc etc, in Singapore but am disappointed that there are none here (or not enough information provided). I very much wanna take up West Coast Swing, not Lindy Hop, not Jive, not anything else but just West Coast Swing. Does anyone in here dance that or can teach me?

I'm local and have some dance background. Write me with some info or even better, someone to dance with, please! :D

There used to be WCS classes at Xenbar in Chinatown.

Why don't you call them to ask when the WCS instructor from US will be back in town or whether they have WCS practice sessions?

Yes. Xenbar did conducted some WCS class from nov 2007 ~ jan 2008

WCS class is conducted by Albert ( US dance instructor ).

I did attend a few of WCS dance lessons, learning a few basic steps.
Good thing abt WCS, is that you can dance in any type of music.

Is also true that WCS is quite new in Singapore. People in Singapore has not been exposed to WCS.

Hence, even i want to practise my WCS steps, it is hard to find one who know WCS

Currently, dance instructor, Albert is not in town.
He only be back in Singapore end of this year ( around nov or dec 2008 )

Once the instructor is back end of this year, i will taking up WCS class again.

Heard they're starting new classes at Xenbar . . .

Anyway, here's a couple of cool WCS videos by Benji Schwimmer, winner of So You Think You Can Dance season 2, and partner

Know other swing dance groups in Sg?

Post by Silenius » Thu, 10 Apr 2008 11:01 pm

Hi all, I'm a local but registered myself here cos this forum thread is the only thing (besides jitterbugs website) that showed up when i googled swing singapore.

I picked up swing dance when I was in the States and fell completely in love and did it regularly for 3 years. I was just as dumbfounded to be unable to find ANY scene in Singapore upon return and haven't touched those dansneakers for 3 yrs but can't wait to start swinging again.

My favourite swing's smooth lindy but beggars can't be choosers. Anyone found any swing scene at all please shout!!

Only one I know is Jitterbugs swing social nights on Thursdays but not sure if their social nights also focus mainly on big band lindy as their lessons claim. Any comments?
-- Cheers,

Audrina

If you have read their profile, you will know that Sing the owner/founder of Jitterbugs graduated from London. Hence, they dance what is popular in London which is very different from the US West Coast Swing. I believe they do mostly 20s or 30s style Big Band lindy. They may still have their Saturday nights out at the Bellini Room at St James Power Station too.

Why don't you drop in to have a look . . . best to drop them an e-mail to confirm first . . .

The other lindy hoppers are at
http://www.flystep.com/

Besides that, the local scene includes Rock n Roll (I was told it's known as East Coast Swing in the US), disco rock also known as le roc or ceroc, and jive; normally at the ballroom dancing venues.

Cheers

WCS in Singapore

Post by AKJammer » Mon, 06 Oct 2008 3:42 pm

Hello,
I'm a dance instructor from Alaska visiting Singapore for a week on real job business and was looking for places to dance (6-12 Oct 2008). I teach and compete in WCS, Hustle and NC2S. I dance most of the swing and C/W dances. Is there a place to go that I can likely find other dancers? If not, is there anyone interested in finding a place and gathering some people together for a couple lessons with dancing afterward? I'm staying at the Conrad, Rm 909. I leave Sunday, but currently both Friday and Saturday are open.

Later,
Jim Dolan
