basically, the airport is about 35km from the main city. most of the time, shuttle bus is provided. but otherwise its quite cheap to take a public bus or taxi to the city from the airport. generally its better to keep to the main streets or to stick to a group. but recently the situation has been volatile and colombo is a high risk area to be around these days.

this might help:

Colomo transit

If you are going to transit in Colombo for only one day better stay in Negombo rather than going to Colombo.

Negombo is very close to the airport .. just 5 km and if you like the beach there are a lot of hotels by the beach (in Lewis place) or by the Negombo lagoon which is better.

That area is pretty safe .. the LTTE terrorists target Colombo mainly to get international media attention ... if lucky to hit a government target. And Colombo is not that nice a place to visit anyway.

thanks a zillion! from what I was told is that the airline always gives the airport accomodation close to the airport only.

anyway, happy journey.
be careful and confirm everything before u leave as srilankan airlines screwed me over a ticket booking and hotel accomodation. it got cancelled and i got stuck in the city @ 1 am in the morning for 4 hours with nowhere to go or sleep.
