to get a OPEN WATER certificate, u have two way to do that.

one is ur do ur theory and confine water (normally in swimming pool) in singapore, then go to open sea to do ur exam. then u will get ur certificate but generally this ll be a bit exp, but u save time.

If you want cheap, then go to tiomand, stay there for 5 days. Complete ur theory, confine water and exam over there. If not mistaken, it only cost u RM800++ include accomodation tioman reef diver resort

Hi,

for your open Water you must do theory, a pool dive and open water dive, they will cover certain skills with you in the sea and practice emergency situations etc...

You can do it with any agency, doesn't need to be Padi, there's lots of agencies world wide, the two biggest ones are PADI and SSI, but all are internationally registered and you can dive with any agency everywhere.

I am certified with SSI and never had any problems anywhere.
I can pm you more details if your interested.

Hi again,

just saw this link about Padi and SSI, thought I share with you, as I got some pm's ref the difference of the agencies

http://www.dive-cairns.com/padissi.shtml

in general, all Padi, SSI, or NAUI are internationally registered and you can dive with all anywhere you want to go. More important than the agency is the dive shop / the people / the instructor you go with, and having someone you feel comfortable with.
Especially PADI and SSI won't make much of a diference when you first start your diving.... the difference gets a bit more when you get to Advanced, where SSI will have few more requirement (more dives) than PADI.. which I think is a good thing, as they make sure you get the experience to be advanced...
in the end, it's important you feel comfortalbe at the shop and agency you're with. I am with SSI and very very happy there.....
