Cable television for maid

Post by matilda » Wed, 27 Feb 2008 2:27 am

Hi
Would be grateful for some advice please.

We employed a maid 2 days ago.

We have bought a television and dvd player for her room.

Today she also asked for cable television (the channel in her own language) for her own tv.

Does anyone else provide this to their maid? If so, did you provide it straightaway when they started or later on as an incentive/reward?

thanks

If you consider cable tv a standard of living as most Americans do then why would you not.

Cable tv being a reward is silly to me, but then again so is making your maid work 7 days a week as well as locking the bread up so your maid doesnt eat it.

However, she only being with you for 2 days and asking for this extra could mean that she is used to this from her last employer.

Alternativaly provide the cable tv but make her pay the monthly cable box fee. That way she will not see you as a push over and try to take advantage of you in the future.

Can't see any harm in giving her the channels as better to ahev her watching TV then getting bored and getting into trouble.

With our Indonesian maid, we just got an antennae for the tv which picked up about 4 or 5 channels from Batam, which was better than the one on cable (TVRI) which most Indonesians don't watch anyway.

True, it depends on their nationality. I still think cable is the way to go though. It's not a lot of money and its a kind gesture.

Yes it's not a lot, but for Indonesians they don't want the cable channels offered, so there's no point getting it if they're not going to watch it. We were more interested in making her happy than giving her something that she didn't want, and all she wanted was to watch her sinetron :D

Do you already have a cable point in her room? If not, it costs a bit to get it installed and SCV needed a letter from our landlord consenting to the installation. Cost depends on how far it is to put in a splitter from exisiting cable and install cable through to her room. Then add cable box and if she's from the philippines, the channel is $15 per month. Our maid didn't ask for it, she watched the local free-to-air channels, but after a few months we offered - we were confident by then that it wouldn't take precedence over her work and it's a connection to home in what can be a pretty lonely life.

So Indonesians only watch Indonesian TV? Hogwash. Our maid is from the Philippines and loves American Idol and Judging Amy and Hallmark movies and who knows what else. Good for you Matlida :)

Okay it was a generalisation, but the majority of Indonesians are more interested in their Indonesian series than other tv. If she wanted cable we would have got it for her, but she didn't, so we didn't. We were also sharing the house with 8 Indonesian girls at the time, and guess what? None of them ever watched the cable shows either and they had full access to the main tv with cable.

Cble television for maid

Post by matilda » Sat, 01 Mar 2008 11:56 am

Hi all
Skye - thanks for your advice about the procedure to have cable installed.

We did not have a cable point in her room.

I made an enquiry as to the costs. If anyone is interested in knowing, the costs at this time are approx as follows;

155 dollars for the installation of the cable point
12 dollars for the box
12 per month for the channel.

Also, as Skye pointed out, a letter from the landlord giving their consent is required.

Thanks again for the interesting discussion. :)

Why not get the channel installed on the main TV so that she can share like a family member. No need to get her a point in her room.
