Does anyone know what the typical customs charges/duties/taxes are on moving household goods? We aren't transporting any liquor or tobacco, or DVDs. Are other items subject to taxation or is there a per pound duty tax?
I'm just trying to figure out if the quotes my moving companies have given me are accurate or if I can expect to pay about $1-2K more when my stuff arrives.
Any advice would be appreciated!

Used personal effects are fine and shouldn't be taxed. Your shipping company will list them as such on the Bill of Lading. I seem to remember being told by our shipping company that "used" meant anything you'd owned for 6 months or more.

An expat friend of mine currently in Spore will move to NYC soon.
He's got a small collection of expensive wines (all for personal use) which he would like to take with him. A couple of questions:
1. Will Singapore Customs demand duty on export?
2. Will US Customs demand duty on import?

Sly one...saw the rates from $2.99- $5.99...although my total was $600...sigh. No value-added service might go back to NTUC.
